In 1964, Republican Barry Goldwater suffered a devastating landslide loss to LBJ. Aside from his home state of Arizona, Goldwater carried only five other states, all in the Deep South. Goldwater amassed only 52 electoral votes, to Johnson’s 486.
But even that paltry performance will look “extremely successful” compared to the thrashing that is in store for Donald Trump in November–if you believe Joe Scarborough. On today’s Morning Joe, after reviewing Trump’s disapproval numbers with various demographics, Scarborough said “Barry Goldwater is going to look like an extremely successful candidate.” Interestingly, Nick Confessore of the New York Times disagreed, arguing that the American electorate is so polarized that LBJ-like landslides are impossible today, and that the candidate of either party has a guaranteed base of 48%.

But with the JFK assassination in 1963, could there have been any GOP candidate that wouldn’t have got their butts kicked by LBJ?
We will see. But I have to say, I live in Central Ohio and some of the campaign ads are devastating, one in particular and frankly, it resonates with me. I will vote for Trump, but I think he let his mouth overload his a$$ and gave the Democrats/Hillary too much to work with.

Used to see comments pop up from viewers, but after Orlando...poof, gone. Then Morning Joe goes full Hillary with no comments visible to counter or affirm...

Trump is actually the opposite of Goldwater. He beats Hillary among independendents but has weak support among republicans.
He has about 70% of support among republicans and she has about 80% support among dems, etc.
Rebublicans will probably unify as the elections gets near and he picks the VP, etc. The numbers don’t bode well for Hillary going forward. She may very well have hit her ceiling and she’s still bellow 50%.

Goldwater had to deal with the liberal media on ALL THREE stations.
If LBJ had left 4 people to die in Benghazi, ‘lost’ $6Billion in the state department, had Vince Foster killed, made $100K in cattle futures, married a rapist, etc etc etc no one would know about any of that.
I remember the Goldwater campaign and the non-stop ads against him. My parents were upset about him losing but nobody knew how to counter the negative publicity with the exploding bomb image. The news media spoke. They set the narrative.

Dad was Democrat Mom was Republican. Every four years Mom would tape a picture of the Republican candidate for POTUS on the wall facing the toilet.
