‘It’s Pretty Lonely’: A Democratic Incumbent in a Sea of Texas Red
The New York Times ^ | JUNE 16, 2016 | MANNY FERNANDEZ

Posted on 06/16/2016 12:31:32 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

There are 29 statewide elected offices in Texas. Republicans control 28 of them. And then there’s Lawrence E. Meyers, 68, the senior judge on the state’s highest criminal court and the sole Democrat.

How did he do it? By defection. He was elected in 1992 as a Republican to the state Court of Criminal Appeals, and won re-election as a Republican in later elections. But he switched parties in 2013.

Now, for the first time since crossing over, Judge Meyers is up for re-election as a Democrat in November. To call him an underdog is an understatement. The last time a Democrat won a statewide office was nearly 22 years ago, in November 1994.

As thousands of Texas Democrats gather this week in San Antonio for the party’s state convention, Judge Meyers talked on Tuesday about being blue in a red state. His office near the Texas Capitol is a rabble-rouser’s oasis: giant flags covering the bookshelves, baseball gloves, a basketball backboard and hoop, “The Big Lebowski” on DVD, GQ magazines and stacks of mail on the chairs.

Q. What does it feel like to be a Democrat in a conservative state?

A. Well, it’s pretty lonely. I wouldn’t classify the state as conservative. It’s just the fact that people who are getting elected to a lot of the positions profess to be conservative, but I would think the state is much more broad-minded than that. It’s frustrating, too. I’ve never regretted changing over to being a Democrat. Right now we just don’t have any statewide leadership to turn to. The days of Bob Bullock and Ann Richards and Pete Laney and those guys, who were all great leaders, they’ve either retired or passed away.

He’ll be even more lonely after he’s defeated for reelection.

But he switched parties in 2013

So he's a fraud who lied to get elected.

And he's a Judge?!

I’M A LONELY LITTLE PETUNIA IN AN ONION PATCH
The Happy Gang

Of all the saddest words
That I have ever heard
The saddest is the story
Told me by a bird
He had spent about and hour
Chatting with a flower
and here is the tale the flower told

I’m a lonely little petunia in an onion patch,
an onion patch, an onion patch

I’m a lonely little petunia in an onion patch
and all I do is cry all day

Boo hoo, boo hoo

The air is so strong it takes my breath away

I’m a lonely little petunia in an onion patch,
oh won’t you come and play with me

Who put me in this bed?
I’ll bet his face is red
I call him down with every teardrop that I shed
If I only had him here
I’d take him by the ear
And make him share my misery

I’m a lonely little petunia in an onion patch,
an onion patch, an onion patch

I’m a lonely little petunia in an onion patch

and all I do is cry all day

Boo hoo, boo hoo

The air is so strong it takes my breath away

(Feee-you!)

I’m a lonely little petunia in an onion patch,
oh won’t you come and play with me

Oh stop. Austin is more liberal than New York.

San Antonio bred Julian Castro. The former mayor. Now hand picked by Hillary running HUD for his la raza credentials. San Antonio his twin brother Joaqin is congressman of San Antonio region. So is Henry crueller major major lib

The place should be in red alert for turning into the next California just in terms of allowing flooding of illegal’s while deflecting blame to Washington

Texas is not republican for long. Mho

The money quote:

“I wouldn’t classify the state as conservative. It’s just the fact that people who are getting elected to a lot of the positions profess to be conservative”

So in other words, there are a lot of democrats who pretend to be Republicans, just to get elected.

I’ve been a judge on this court for a quarter of a century and I’ve never seen a voter fraud case in my life. I knew it was done only to suppress the vote.

Another insight into his demented mind. He never saw a voter fraud case, so that proves it doesn't exist? What did he do as a judge? Allocate damages for the neighbor's cow getting into your garden? I'm in my third year as a precinct election judge and haven't been through a single election where someone(s) didn't show up demanding to be allowed to vote in our precinct even though they weren't registered. If it happens in a well-run orderly precinct, you know it is happening in one which isn't.

And what's this $#*+ about voter suppression? Seriously! Who doesn't have or can't get a valid ID with a minimum of effort? The only voter suppression which is happening with voter ID laws is those voting fraudulently, multiple times or on behalf of someone else.

If he wants lonely, he should try being a conservative in the Republican party.
