Top conservatives meet at secret dinner to discuss Cruz's future
The Hill ^ | 6/15/2016 | Jonathan Swan

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) attended a confidential dinner with more than 20 top conservatives on Tuesday night to plan his comeback as a movement leader in the mold of Ronald Reagan.

The dinner was at the Virginia home of conservative activist Brent Bozell, and the agenda was to plot Cruz’s future and the future of the conservative movement. The undertone of the dinner was about how to position Cruz for a future tilt at the presidency and to spearhead the conservative movement from his seat in the Senate, those in attendance said.

Dining with Cruz and his chief of staff, Paul Teller, were some of the most powerful figures in the conservative movement.

The spectrum of economic, national security and social conservatives seated at the table included Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint, Club for Growth President David McIntosh, direct-mail guru Richard Viguerie, National Rifle Association board member and former Cincinnati Mayor Ken Blackwell, and Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser, sources confirmed.

According to those in attendance, the leaders discussed how they could work more effectively together and how to harness their vast financial and human networks in the service of conservative principles and Cruz's career.

Combined, those at the table have access to hundreds of millions of dollars and some of the largest ground armies on the right.

There was no specific discussion of electoral politics or whether Cruz will support presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump this cycle.

Many of the leaders at the dinner want Cruz to run for president again, and they are viewing Cruz’s unsuccessful 2016 run as similar to Reagan’s failed attempt in 1976 to unseat the incumbent Republican president, Gerald Ford.

Cruz showed himself to be a theocrat and a globalist. At one point, I donated to him.

No thanks and no more.

Isn’t it a little early for talk of the next presidential race? Not to mention, I thought most the party didn’t like Ted Cruz. Maybe they’ve gotten used to him over time.
I still think Cruz would be a good VP pick. When it comes to winning the high office, politicians can be very forgiving and magnanimous.

David McIntosh and Club for Growth are “true conservatives”? That’s funny stuff.
They are a nest of cheap labor stooges. Any nevertrumper is by definition a RAT and a Democrat ally.
True conservatives heh.

Note to SMART PEOPLE that were at this dinner...your nominee is DONALD TRUMP you should be working to get him elected you can figure where to stick Cruz later...i suggest you don’t stick him where you stuck him before like in my face calling me a wienie cause I would not vote for him...well actually his father did that...because I am a retired Pastor and went against his excellency...
I also suggest he eat a lot of humble pie the next four years...At the end of Trumps first term ...then and only then can he begin to look at his future im the Post Trump era...
Now since he won’t do anything like that because he has an ego bigger than lady gaga’s...how bout I ignore you for the next 20 years and maybe you will just go away..

Appears GOP plantation "conservatives" not focused at all on defeating Hillary and her SCOTUS picks. How principled and conservative of them.

How so? There are hundreds of political races this year and the candidates in each one are rightly concerned with winning their own race. If the presidential candidate wins and has no supporters in Congress, it will have been a meaningless victory.

The point isn't that Cruz is going to challenge Trump this year. That ship has sailed. I'd be surprised if Cruz ever gets very far in his presidential ambitions. The point now is whether his defeat this year means that his career is over. He's fully justified in trying to head off an end to his career, and it doesn't mean that anybody is less concerned about defeating HRC.

These aren’t beltway rinos. These are the true conservatives who up to this point Trump is not courting. Hopefully he will at some point soon.

News flash: We had 49 dead Americans in the streets of Orlando.

“True conservatives” would be fighting with every breath to stop the Butcher of Benghazi. Bought and paid for beltway careerists not so much.

This isn’t about Cruz or Trump. It’s about us. Unfortunately, Ted Cruz and the rest of the “true conservatives” can’t be bothered to defend us because that may help elect Trump. How pathetic is that?

Who are these conservatives? Frankly most of these conservatives are pc liberals, who likely supported past Bush bailouts, amnesty snc common core. I’m fed up with these self appointed big shots who have never worked a day in the private sector.

First item on the agenda should be eligibility for office of POTUS or VPOTUS - person born to two US citizens on US soil.

Enough of Kenyans, Canucks, we have seen what they can do - destroy US and build whatever other allegiance they have. Shame on politicians, talking heads and others who covered up traitors and helped them into the office.

Obama should be in jail and all his executive orders and destructive laws should be annulled.

Anyone with balls left? If this most important law was broken, what else is waiting for US???

Sorry, but at this point that's all on Trump. For a principled conservative supporting Trump is like nailing jelly to a tree.

These so called “conservatives” have achieved absolutely nothing.

Wall built?
Obamacare defunded?
Trillion dollar annual foreign trade deficits reduced?
Invasion of illegals stopped/curbed/reduced?
National debt reduced?
Vets receiving timely healthcare?
Food stamp growth halted?
Illegals deported? (Cruz never utters forced deportation)
Military strengthened?
Middle-East stabilized?
ISIS defeated?
Federal budget growth stopped?

Cruz and his comrades are all in the pockets of their rich donors. No wonder middle class is getting schlonged. These career politicians who call themselves conservatives ARE ALL TALK AND NO RESULTS!

Right.

My worst nightmare? Trump is going to be talked into changing his gun stance regarding no-fly list by Ryan & McConnell. So after Trump gives an inch and the Dems give him kudos, the Dems will take a mile and backstab him with new terms they add at the last minute. THEN the GOPe could backstab Trump, pointing to him and declaring loudly, "Hey Trump supporters! Look what he did to you!" and get Trump supporters all in a huff for giving in on 2nd Amendment.

Then here comes Cruz (or Rubio) to the rescue, excoriating Trump for "caving" just in time for a convention floor fight.

It would take cooperation behind the scenes between dems and GOPe, but hey, they're called The UniParty for a reason.
