New plan proposed to notify Remington rifle owners of trigger retrofit

HELENA -

A new plan, complete with targeted digital and radio advertising, has been proposed to notify millions of Remington rifle owners about how to fix their weapon’s trigger mechanism.

The plan filed in federal court late last week in Kansas City, Missouri, is part of an ongoing lawsuit claiming trigger mechanisms are defective in several Remington rifle models, sometimes causing the rifle to fire without the trigger being pulled.

The plan also has a high-profile author: Signal Interactive Media, the firm co-founded by Jim Messina, who managed President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign and was a top aide to former U.S. Sen. Max Baucus of Montana.

The plan includes a social networking plan using Facebook, a national radio media campaign using syndicated shows that target the demographic, such as conservative talk-show hosts Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, direct mail and emails, and 11,000 informational posters at retail locations.

As I recall, it was the safety, not the trigger. Most of us know the best safety.

Different problem.

This is the recall: http://xmprecall.remington.com/pdfs/xmprecall-notice.pdf

This was the safety failure problem: http://www.guns.com/2012/04/16/remington-prepared-for-nbc-allegations-of-defective-products/

The bottom of this article says the two are not related: http://www.guns.com/2014/04/11/remington-issuing-safety-recall-select-model-700-model-seven-rifles/

You could be correct, there were many more stories printed, on local, state news about this.

I abide by my and what many have said, best safety, don’t point, don’t play with the trigger.

Other than that, an FYI for those that haven’t heard of the recall/upgrade?

Are there any who haven’t?

Then there isn’t a gun registration list that the gov’t can use to alert owners of defective self protection tools? (or they just don’t care)

sometimes causing the rifle to fire without the trigger being pulled.
= = =

Well, we all know that guns do that, after climbing out of the gun safe.

Repair mod involves welding the chamber of the rifle shut.

As I recall, the original suit was due to rifle being able to fire while the safety was “ON”.

Which I can agree would involve the trigger.

Regardless, I still give my condolences to the Father for his loss.

What’s wrong with them? Do they accidentally fire 700 rounds per per minute?

It's worse than that. The gun could fire when you move the safety from SAFE to FIRE with no human interaction with the trigger.

I’ve replaced all the Remington triggers with Shilen ones.

700 when in ‘limp’ mode.

Normally it is up around 1200-1250.

The trigger and the safety are part of the same mechanism. Sometimes you would put the safety on and the gun would fire and sometimes you would take the safety off and the gun would fire. The whole design in the fire safety system is bad.

YUP, too bad writers, editors etc can’t write an honest story.

(as if WE don’t have enough to mock them about)

BTW, I’ve kind of glossed over many of the stories... for me it is local. (perhaps for you also)

I had not heard of it and checked my 700 when I saw this and it turns out it is subject to the recall although I only shoot it at the range and cannot ever recall even putting the safety on.

The guy in the video claims that he did not do anything wrong,
but he leaned his loaded weapon up against his truck and that was his mistake and yes, what he did wrong.

This case has had and lost it’s Perry Mason moment.

YOU may continue to litigate it, I have NO position either way.

I wanted to provide more possible owners knowledge of the settlement/recourse.

Remington’s been making the 700 rifle since forever; why is this happening now?

Actually, it's an older case and this is part of the settlement.

Barber, of Willow Creek, began his crusade after his 9-year-old son, Gus, was shot and killed in 2001 by a Remington Model 700 rifle that he says fired without the trigger being pulled.

The ins and outs of the case have been part of Montana news off and on. I thought this settlement (update) might be of interest for those who aren't in our local.

Thanks - I’m just surprised that it’s the Remington 700, which is an ancient and highly respected rifle.

I haven’t really been following this, but... you’re sure it’s not one of those bogus lawsuits filed by someone who screwed up and wants to blame someone else - someone with deep pockets?

NO, it’s a real and settled lawsuit.

Has had many different news articles here in Montana since, as I recall, that’s where it started.

Even here, many owners don’t believe in the lawsuit or it’s findings.

As I said, I have no claim either way, just passing on information.

An idiot can make any outcome possible. Leveraging the trigger finger on safety release can be very stupid. My 700s have only shot what and when I wanted and no guvment shill game is messing with them or my numbers. We don’t have gun problems we have certain people problems.
