Senate Votes to Require Women to Register for the Draft (McConnell, McCain for; Cruz against)
New York Times ^ | June 14, 2016 | JENNIFER STEINHAUER

In the latest and perhaps decisive battle over the role of women in the military, Congress is embroiled in an increasingly intense debate over whether they should have to register for the draft when they turn 18.

On Tuesday, the Senate approved an expansive military policy bill that would for the first time require young women to register for the draft. The shift, while fiercely opposed by some conservative lawmakers and interest groups, had surprisingly broad support among Republican leaders and women in both parties.

The United States has not used the draft since 1973 during the Vietnam War. But the impact of such a shift, reflecting the evolving role of women in the armed services, would likely be profound.

Under the Senate bill passed on Tuesday, women turning 18 on or after Jan. 1, 2018, would be forced to register for Selective Service, as men must do now. Failure to register could result in the loss of various forms of federal aid, including Pell grants, a penalty that men already face. Because the policy would not apply to women who turned 18 before 2018, it would not affect current aid arrangements.

“The fact is,” said Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona and the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, “every single leader in this country, both men and women, members of the military leadership, believe that it’s fair since we opened up all aspects of the military to women that they would also be registering for Selective Services.”

The Supreme Court ruled in 1981 that women did not have to register for the draft, noting that they should not face the same requirements as men because they did not participate on the front lines of combat.

As much as I dislike the concept, you are absolutely right. If women want all barriers broken down then they must face what is on the other side.

Message to feministas: Careful what you wish for, you may get it.

Why don’t we all just go ahead and slit our wrists. Let the Muslims and the Mexicans have the whole damn thing...

You go first!

The DoD broke down most remaining barriers to women in combat. Why would you think the draft should violate that concept?

Our nation is miles down the road in the wrong direction, and still accelerating.

...that doesn’t mean we should return to the draft or that females should
ever be drafted for combat which I am totally against,...

***************

There are lots of jobs in the military that females can do that aren’t
combat related. They serve today, have served in the past and should
continue to serve.

Nixon ended registration for the draft.

Carter reinstated it.

Muslim women will, I suppose, be exempt. Modesty, propriety and all that.

You mean the Canadian who voted for letting 0bama give $150 BILLION to the Iranians, as long as the Iranians self-certified they were nice people?

Yeah, I don't agree with you. And we gave Cruz hundreds of dollars when he announced.

Cruz sure was proud of trying to increase H1-Bs here by 500%. It must have been because we didn't have enough domestic Christians out of work.

if males have to sign up for selective service at 18 so should females.. that doesn’t mean we should return to the draft or that females should ever be drafted for combat which I am totally against,, but in a national emergency I don’t want half of the population’s brains sitting on the sidelines..

My sentiments exactly, LL2! But stand by for some heavy incoming by freepers, particularly the one who said that since I was for making women register and liberals were for it as well, therefore I was a liberal! Quite amazing really.

Exactly. They want equality in all things? Give it to them in spades until they cry for relief. Then we can start rolling back the insanity.

I am a woman. I am a retired Navy officer. I support registering women for the draft. We require men to register. Women should register also.

Thanks for your reality! What draft? There isn't one.

This is one of those show boat votes, which have nothing to do with reality. There is no draft!

Is this sometype of left wing census data base for women who become 18?

When this pamphlet came out early in 1973, the prospect of women being drafted seemed absurd. Man, how times have changed!

“We have missed a wonderful oppurtunity to place a man in the presidency of high moral and ethical character.”

What are you talking about? Trump is the most moral and ethical candidate in this election cycle, and he hasn’t missed anything.

Hasn’t missed a beat, really.
