Actually this is the end result of the Euro. Socialist policies existed in these low producing countries because the government could just print money. Guarantee 5% a year raise, even though GDP is stagnant? No problem just print 5% more money every year...
Once the Euro became the currency this option no longer exists for them so to keep the policies going their only choice was to borrow. Eventually they could not borrow any more and the Eu forced austerity on them and their policies. Which of course the public doesn’t like since its been having a cushy lazy ride for generations.. So end game they lash out at the socialist party that was in power the whole time.

In power, parties of the Left find that the demands of governing force the embrace of policies they opposed when out of power. Most importantly, the state, as a heavy borrower, needs orderly and secure bond markets. Despite hostility toward the wealthy, governments of the Left need the wealthy and their financial intermediaries to buy government bonds.
No, it is because the Eurozone has been flooded with nasty tempered Muslims which have become a threat to all of Europe and the people know that is the left’s fault.

“Populism” is the default media term for nationalism I’ve noticed. People understand nationalism, but calling it populism confuses the issue of whether people want to keep their own nation-state or be part of a big crony capitalist “global community”.
I don’t think nationalism and populist are the same anymore.
They never were. Conservatives used to hate populism.
So if the left wing is polling badly because they have adopted the policies of the right, is the right polling better? If so, have they shifted left or further right?
Europe has different populist parties - some had Communist roots like Greece’s Syriza, some came from fascism such as France’s National Front and some are conservative, like the UK’s UKIP.
What they all have common is a rejection of globalism, neoliberalism and multi-culturalism. So despite differing ideological origins, populists all arrive at basically the same place.
Donald Trump is not a conservative, he is a populist on the right side of the political spectrum.
Populism is a rejection of the establishment.
Whoever is in power takes it on the chin.
You have Bernie Sanders on the Left and Donald Trump on the Right.
Populism is more or less here to stay.
I agree with you. We are seeing the collapse of the post WWII order. It began with the dissolutions of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union, but the globalist, UN, secular state fantasy is now falling apart in the West as well.
