What if Donald Trump is exactly what people want after the Orlando shooting?

After I wrote a piece Sunday on the lack of empathy showed by Donald Trump in the wake of the Orlando shootings — and why that was a bad thing for his chances of winning this fall — I heard from a lot of smart people who vehemently disagreed with that analysis.

"I actually think because this is getting cast as terrorism, his response will work with a lot of people," said one Democratic pollster, echoing a sentiment that I have heard a lot over the past 24 hours.

And, judging from Trump's tweets and public statements over the past 24 hours, it's clear that he believes empathy isn't really what people are looking for anymore. "Look, we're led by a man that either is not tough, not smart, or he's got something else in mind," Trump said on Fox News on Monday morning. He had previously called for Obama to resign over his handling of the Orlando terrorism incident. And his Twitter feed is filled with lots of this sort of rhetoric:

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

What has happened in Orlando is just the beginning. Our leadership is weak and ineffective. I called it and asked for the ban. Must be tough

Why? Because Trump believes that if past is prologue, then zigging while all other politicians (including everyone in his party) zags is the right thing to do. That conventional wisdom about this election and what voters want remains wildly off and only he truly understands that people want strength and leadership, not empathy.

The other side will do something to stop him.

Hell, his own side is doing things to stop him.

I mean, up to and including assassination, or postponing the election. Wag the Dog.

Trump was 100 percent right in his speech yesterday. It’s wimps and assorted girlymen who just don’t get it, and probably never will.

It was Donald Trump who delivered the Presidential response to this terrorist tragedy, with strength and conviction; the tepid weak Resident did not!

I think Donald Trump is president already, and that our GOP congress had better start falling in line, and quit prostrating themselves before the lame duck.

At best he is a wus. Something else? He is a Muzzie.

When did he show a lack of empathy?

This continual attempt to fit him into the psychological profile of a sociopath is not going to work.

If you want to see lack of empathy, just take a gander at Obama’s smarmy, cold little speech today.

Imagine the morale over at WP - people’s careers are tied to this “news business” and they see the company’s leadership sabotaging the product.

The fake headline writers must be getting some pretty tough looks in the hall.

I think the Left and the GOPee is waking up to the fact that Trump is already in charge. He is leading and more and more Americans are following.

When the GOPee realizes what is happening, there will be a rush to join Trump.

WaPo and the rest of Liberaldom are stuck with a mindset such that they cannot believe the People could believe or prefer something that is counter to the Liberal worldview. They get blindsided pretty easily because they keep one eye firmly closed and the other barely open and focused on phantasms.

Lack of empathy? What the hell are they saying. What is he supposed to do wear sack cloth??

I though his cancelling events and having a non political message was the way to go here.

To Vandekoik, Trump was exactly what I wanted before this horrible incident. I have not seen anything he has done which would change my opinion except add to my fervor for him.

What people want... after the capture of the schooner Maria, and Dauphin and the enslavement of their crew by the Muslims of Tripoli.

So they’re saying Trump is like Thomas Jefferson?
