Declaring war on a religion or philosophy would open up a can of worms that could never be closed.

Declare war on ISIS, Al Qaeda, and a few other specific groups with leaders who can sign a peace treaty. ISIS has territory, collects taxes, and other things a state does. Lack of recognition by the UN doesn't mean they are not a state.

I want the feds to have more ability to take suspected terrorists into custody and to do more monitoring. With all the things the FBI "missed", I think they did the right thing to an American citizen in non-war time and needs more ability to violate rights of certain citizens. But I do not want a never-ending Super-Patriot-Act. Declare war and tie any extra-constitutional capabilities to the war and treat these people as POWs, not criminals with rights. Then we get our freedom back when the war ends.

It's funny you mention that because Japan was truly our first form of religious fascism as they believed their emperor was actually God living on earth. When he announced on radio the surrender in 1945 it was the first time that the ordinary Japanese had ever heard his voice. The Islamist Fascists have taken religious fascism to a new level.

The State Department lists about 60 international terrorist groups ranging from ISIL to Communist groups in South America and the Philippines to Basque separatists to the IRA. Is Thomas declaring war on all of them?

And what about groups identified as domestic terror groups like the Klan and the Earth Liberation Front and Black Panther splinter groups?
