Multiple sclerosis patients who were severely disabled are walking, working and even downhill skiing again following a breakthrough therapy which completely destroys, then rebuilds, the immune system.

The trial, which is the first in the world to show complete long-term remission from the debilitating disease has been hailed by experts as ‘exciting’ ‘unprecedented,’ and ‘close to curative.’

Although it is unclear what causes MS it is thought that the immune system attacks the protective coating which surrounds nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord leading to inflammation, pain, disability and in severe cases, early death...

"The new technique, which is a treatment usually used to fight leukaemia, involves using chemotherapy to entirely eradicate the damaged immune system, before rebooting it with a transfusion of bone marrow cells."

Makes sense as a way to treat an auto-immune disorder.

So the cure for the immune system is, you turn it off then turn it back on again?

Now we know why they call it "MS"...

By the time FDA gets through studying for approval it most of the hopeful in this country will be dead.

Sorry, it is just that way.

After they approve it, if they approve it, the price will stratospheric because of all the hoops the providers must jump through for approval trials.

Medicine in this country is a business racket that makes the military industrial complex look like chrior boys. It is not a humanitarian enterprise. It is just business for extreme profit that preys on the emotions of people who are just clinging to life.

I met a woman about 12 yrs ago with MS, she was a quadriplegic in her early 20s and they did chemo on her. They said it was a one time chance but it worked. She still had it and had bad spells at times but has led a fairly normal life for 37 years.

The approval process may not be as onerous as you’re expecting since this uses known medical techniques that have been used extensively for treating leukemia.

A friend of mine was diagnosed with MS - probably 25 years ago. She went completely vegetarian on organic foods. She is the picture of health today.

Wiping out the immune system will remove the virus from the rest of the places it lurks in the body how, exactly?

You are partly right. The best hospitals tend to be affiliated with churches or universities and are non-profit.

I would like to think you could be correct but based on prior episodes you will not be.

This is wonderful, if...

I am not stupid and it is not clear and there has been a lot of confusion of two types of stem cells are used, one, adult, two, from abortions.

Which is this, and please don’t be insulting as it is not clear.

That was the first, and only, question that came in to my mind. Stem cells — adult or embryonic? It’s not stated in the article as far as I can tell.

Oh, I pray this is true and will help cure MS. Our daughter was just diagnosed with it. It is a terrible disease, and she is facing it with such bravery, Maybe this will be her answer, along with so many others who are battling this illness.
