At MY Dollar General, the perp in this story would have been held a gunpoint by the patrons of the store.Why? Isn't there an available dumpster out behind the store?

Yeah, but we tend to take justice in our own hands only for actual assaults/murders. Attempts will only get you beat down and held for the sheriff.
