Turns Out Trump Has Always Liked Susana Martinez
Roll Call ^ | Stephanie Akin

Donald Trump has a new message for Susana Martinez, the Republican New Mexico governor he slammed in front of a home state crowd for not doing her job: Actually, he thinks she's pretty great.

Trump would now like Martinez's endorsement, he said Thursday in a phone interview with a New Mexico newspaper reporter, signaling a truce in a public spat with the country's only Latina governor and chairwoman of the Republican Governor's Association that had raised questions about Trump's desire to unify the party.

“I respect her. I have always liked her,” he told the Sante Fe New Mexican.

The reversal comes after Martinez made her own gesture of rapprochement. She said in a television interview that, in spite of her criticism of Trump's stance on Mexican immigrants, she remained open to endorsing him.

It also coincided with the taming of Trump's most powerful critics within the party. House Speaker Paul Ryan announced Thursday that he would no longer withhold his support for the Party's presumptive nominee. And a fervent effort to recruit a third party candidate who could rival Trump fizzled with the naming of relatively unknown lawyer David French.

Trump's attack on Martinez, at a rally in Albuquerque last week, attracted national attention.

Martinez has frequently appeared on short lists of potential running mates for Trump. She represents demographics — Hispanics and women — considered crucial to his ability to win the general election.

But instead of courting her, Trump swiped at her after she withheld her endorsement.

Trump is the street fighter who will do anything to win. He will get down in the mud and the blood and the beer. It is the only way to deal with the Dem political machine that engages in the strategy of personal destruction, race-baiting, and identity politics.

The GOP has lost the popular vote in 5 out of the last 6 elections. It is a dying party that needs to stop being defensive and go on the attack. This is going to be one of the nastiest and ugliest campaigns in history and Trump is the only Rep that seems to understand how to fight it.

Well said and true. Bravo!

You ask a very good question! And I will give you a good answer.

Nothing in life is 100%. We are all complex human beings. The more intelligent we are, the more complex we become.

A person like governor Martinez, or any other person for that matter is never going to be 100% perfect.

Even in marriage, the successful ones are where both spouses are tolerant, and flexible to accommodate the other.

Since she is my Governor, a couple of thoughts:

Here in NM we have over 50% of the population on Medicare or Medicade. I have not seen her take any steps to reduce this number.

Here in NM we have over 21% of the population on Food Stamps. I have not seen her take any steps to reduce this number.

One of her signature issues was repealing drivers licences for illegals. We have finally have a law that addresses the issue - sort of. They can still get drivers licences, but they look different than regular licences. Yay.

She has not been a kickin’ ass and taking names kind of Governor.

Then she STUPIDLY injects herself into national politics by STUPIDLY repudiating the candidate that is going to win the nomination. She compounds this STUPIDITY by snubbing the candidate when he visits her state.

Trump, in classic Trump mode, repays like with like and rebukes her from the podium when visiting New Mexico.

She then STUPIDLY mouths off about how offended she is.

Governor Martinez is not a rocket scientist.

Medicare is a federal program. Governor of any state has little or no control over who gets it.

As for the economy of New Mexico, it is very difficult for it to be different when it is surrounded by states with increasing dependence by populace on government handouts and bad economy due to Obama policies of high regulations, high taxes on businesses.

In my conservative viewpoint, a Governor lowers the number of people on medicade/medicare and food stamps by bettering the economic conditions of the state. For a primer on how to do this look to Indiana.

She has not significantly lowered taxes nor improved the environment of the state for business.

She could have fought for Right To Work, but didn't. She could have fought to change our taxation system from a business unfriendly Gross Receipts Tax basis to a more business friendly Sales Tax basis, but didn't.

Seems she spent most of her energy on education issues, which while pressing, are mostly the result of socio-economic realities that no governor will be able to change. Plus, no matter how good she did on that issue she would never be credited with any gains. See President Bush's No Child Left Behind for an example of unappreciated and denigrated effort.

That’s just Trump and part of his leadership style. Notice most of Trump’s attacks are in response to someone saying something about him. Trump will usually label that “nasty”. Then he calls them out for the hacks that they are which is the truth and Trump means it. Then they get blowback and usually come around to being “nice” to Trump. At which time he says he likes them and they like him and at the end of the day, he owns them. He knows how the game works and that he needs to play nice. Big difference is that Trump never grovels or asks for their support. They usually say something incredibly stupid which he pounces on and then they come around. Some might call it leadership.

Look, TRUMP blasted Obama for earning absolutely no respect from some foreign leaders, but was shown disdain.

TRUMP gave the example of Cuba. Obama went trailing over there to visit the island and NO ONE met the plane carrying the President of the United States of America.

In not the same but in similar manner, TRUMP trails to New Mexico fighting for votes in a blue state and the Republican governor sits on her @$$ and excuses herself from not only attending his rally, but exercises a cold reception with no official welcome for the Republican nominee.

She should have been deeply criticized, and she was. You don’t reward that crap and that lack of hospitality, by slinking in and out of a state and not letting her know that you damn sure noticed.

Chances are the man may be President of the United States.
He is the nominee of the party who has been plenty good to Ms. Martinez.

Let him fight his own battles without Martinez showing her undies. She represents ALL the people of New Mexico and not just those in a snit over TRUMP being DONE with this ongoing take-over of our population, covering us up with South American socialists.

Stop the hand wringing and turn off CNN. TRUMP is wrecking the place, and as I have said many times... that is exactly what we prayed for.

Lower taxes have not worked out good in Nebraska. Sure we all like lower taxes, especially me, because I was forking over $40K every year in federal taxes and induced me to take early retirement. Again, a lone governor with no industrial and manufacturing base such as in NM, is swimming against the tide if the national economy sucks. Did you notice only 35,000 jobs created last month nationwide?

Worst o the bunch are so called conservatives in congress who have done absolutely nothing significant for the conservative agenda. No wall, no defunding of Obamacare, no reduction of tax rates, no reduction in food stamps, no reduction in national debt, eviscerating military, Vets receiving horrible healthcare, etc etc.

Politicians who call themselves constitutional conservatives should be ashamed. And guess what? GOP has majority in congress!

No, he needs someone as vp who has the gonads to carry on his agenda if he is taken from the office. Are there any anti-globalists with such gonads?

Donald will lose more votes than gain with Martinez. Her support is New Mexico Hispanics/Republicans who are so so different from rest of states.

No no no no. Never.

Hispanic not enough with her.

Saying someone screwed up when they did so doesn’t mean you don’t like them. But it is better to speak privately with them rather than tweet or speechify about it.

“”Stop the hand wringing and turn off CNN””

Why would you presume to know what TV channels I watch or if I even have a TV?

For all of you who believe that I need to be castigated because of the comments I made about Trump - let me break it down for you since you failed to get the point.

I do not care what the man says, how many people or who he attacks - AS LONG AS HE DOESN’T BACK DOWN FROM HIS WORDS THE NEXT DAY. Do we or do we not want a president who says what he means and means what he says? Do we want a president we can rely on without backpedaling? As simple as that!

When Jim Rob warned us that he would not allow the nastiness and arguments to continue about Trump, I don’t think he meant that Trump supporters can attack other Trump supporters if they don’t like their replies to threads.

Trump knows what he is doing. He didn't dispense with 16 other contenders without knowing what he is doing.

Martinez trashed Trump locally and at the Koch event in Palm Beach.

She didn't screw up...she needed to be corrected.

What complete and utter BS.

We want a President who listens and adjusts to reality. Information and intel changes from day to day.

We want a President who can adapt.

The first thing you have to understand and accept is, first and foremeost, the number one purpose of politics is too get elected. Idealism and high-minded principles take a back seat to defeating your opponent. Once you get that, it becomes easier to understanding politicians.

What happened to having civil conversations here on FR? Is Trump receiving new information and intelligence every day? Is that why he backpedals one day after trashing someone the previous day? Took in more information?

Don’t you expect more from your friends in the way of truthfulness and loyalty? I would hope so but maybe not! I don’t think I’d think too much of a friend who didn’t stand by their words longer than overnight.
