A Graying Generation Founded on Peace and Love Finds its Champion: Bernie Sanders

MOUNT SHASTA, Calif. — It is a glorious day in Northern California, and Lewis Elbinger, a 68-year-old Bernie Sanders supporter, is feeling great — or, as he puts it, “high vibe.” In the five decades since he first painted a white peace sign on his forehead, protested the Vietnam War and hitchhiked to India to become a monk, in fact, he has never felt more optimistic about the country than at this very moment.

“A consciousness is rising,” he says.

A case could be made that this is not exactly so in the sense that Elbinger means it.

Donald Trump is now the presumptive Republican nominee for president. Hillary Clinton, according to everyone who is not a Sanders supporter, will be his Democratic opponent, meaning that Sanders is about to become the latest in a long line of progressive candidates to lose.

But that is not how things appear in Mount Shasta, where the light seems brighter, the air cleaner, the sky bluer, and where Elbinger is about to get into his car with two fellow Berners and drive 130 miles south. The destination is Chico, where he will try to become a Sanders delegate representing California at this summer’s Democratic National Convention. Put another way, he will be the older, white-haired Jewish guy with steadfast 1960s values trying to win an election against all odds.

This is very funny to me, having grown up with these kinds of people. Back then I was too naïve to realize the craziness. A friend of mine said that Bernie would make a great mayor of Tannersville -- one of these hippie enclaves. Boy is she right.

He'd also make a great resident sidewalk philosopher in a homeless shelter.

Now, Bernie’s task is to get the California burnt-out gray-haired pony tail types up and out to the polls. What day is it? Where am I? Who am I?

Aging white-haired supporters who Feel The Bern have, like, some very far-out and groovy ideas, man.

Sanders’ support comes almost exclusively from idealistic, naive Millennials. But leave it to the Post to try to broaden his appeal.

Oh Gag me with a spoon!

You mean the Generation that never met a big government program they didn't like?

We Millennials get a lot of crap.

But we sure as hell didn't vote for LBJ and Carter!

We sure as Hell out protesting Vietnam, waving the Flag of the Vietcong.

I know what we have now a days, but it sure as Hell didn't start with us.

I know quite a few Gen Xers who are Sanders fans. Not sure why....other than the fact that even they can’t stand Hildabeast.

This is true. The FSA does have a lot of appeal for some people.

Bernie Sanders rallies and volunteer meetings are hands down the best way to hook up since the George McGovern rallies and volunteer meetings. Fun for all ages.

The Millennials who support Bernie tend to be the children of these aging hippies (or rather, liberals). At least from my own observation. The children of the Gen-Xers tend to be more conservative. (Again, at least from my observation.)

I'm a member of the "graying" generation. No socialist, communist, faggot or atheist speaks for me.

Give me a Teddy Roosevelt please. Or a Black Jack Pershing. Mebbe a Patton? My dad was in Patton's 3rd in Europe. Patton would be ok. But no sniveling cowards anymore, please.

Bit o’ language confusion going down here:

“peace” = drug-induced loss of consciousness

“love” = indiscriminate coupling

“We’ve been waiting for this our entire lives,” says Elbinger, who retired after a 28-year State Department career that included a stint as a political adviser to Gen. David H. Petraeus at the U.S. Central Command in Florida.

Well, that explains a lot.

These people are walking, breathing cartoons and proof that wisdom does not always come with age.

A Graying Generation Founded on Peace and Love Finds its Champion: Bernie Sanders”

...founded on pot, sweat, stink, unemployment and waiting for Mommy and Daddy to kick off for inheritance.

My Father in law built and owned 11 McDonalds. Sold them and retired. His “kids” (all in their 50’s) inherited large sums. Except for his “hippy, dirt ball, liberal” daughter. She lives in a cabin in VT and claimed to never need or want money. She’s never worked. Her Father sent her money to survive. When he died she got nothing because, and this was the sole reason, she never once even sent him a Thank You card for his gifts. She tried to sue his estate and lost. She’s finally on her own.
