Ran out of fuel half lap after crossing start/finish. Dumped by the europeans last year in F1....Incredible race!!

It was great to see the rookie American take this one. This race demonstrated the usual factor that part of the secret of winning is simply having the good fortune and skill to stay out of trouble when other drivers hit the wall.

They were making stops with 5-7 laps to go.

I think a lot of teams were betting on a caution flag before the white flag. When that didn't happen they didn't have any choice but to pit for gas - and at that point the goal was to make the stop as short as possible, so waiting as long as possible was the plan.

Rossi's team took the other bet - green flag to the end - and it paid off. Andretti and his team know their stuff, and Rossi had the skill to follow the fuel management plan, and for a rookie that may have been easier than trying to race it out with some of the more experienced drivers.

Yup,
Stay outta trouble,
A little luck.

A family named Bettenhausen focused on Indy for Years and the track destroyed them.

Personally,
I beat that Damn Track!

the last 35 laps were run under green- that rarely happens...Rossi was holding on and hoping he didn’t run out of grass before crossing the bricks and he did it!!

The daily beast has a retrospective article for when trump was turned down to show at the 2011 indy 500 for being too political (no link, and it locks up my screen) (why? i am on chrome running windows).

“Don’t know squat about F1 racing, but I would think that with modern sensors and availability of all sorts of computing power, one would be able to continuously monitor fuel consumption (and continuously predict it as well) so as to make an end-of-the-race refueling decision with a pretty high degree of reliability (maybe even within an error margin of +/- one-half lap!).”

In F-1, the driver must finish the race, do a slow down/victory lap and have at least one liter of fuel left in the tank for FIA scrutineering.

AR would not have had a great time if he was in F-1 today...

It’s possible, but apparently he had a lot of team personnel in his ear over the radio coaching him on how much of a lead he had in the final laps and how fast he needed to go in order to make it to the finish.

I was rooting for Hinchcliffe, but I can’t help but be happy for a first-time winner in ANY race. Especially one as prestigious as this race.

He did spend quite a bit of time in Europe running the ladder series into F1. Quite a few of those teams are based in Britan, as are the majority of F1 teams; even though Haas F1 has an American constructor’s license their base of operations is there, to cite one example. This was also the case for Anglo-American Racers in the 1960’s, which was the F1 arm of Dan Gurney’s All-American Racers.

Absolutely; luck is a big part of winning a 500-mile race. They interviewed A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, and Rick Mears in the pre-race show (all are four-time winners) and all of them said as much. A.J. also added that he won a couple he should have lost and lost two or three he was sure he would win.

He did make a few starts in F1 for Manor last year, and he is actually still under contract to them as a reserve driver.

Who knows? Maybe this will lead to a better opportunity for him in F1 down the road; I was kind of hoping Haas would sign him.

you couldn’t be anymore incorrect...he drove five races for Manor Racing towards the end of the 2015 F1 season, almost scoring points for that backmarker during the USGP...

If...If...If...

blah...blah...blah...

If Uncle Fred had boobs he would be Aunt Ruth.

Rossi and team dealt with the same issues
as the other teams so suck it up.

F1 races are becoming ridiculously processional....Saturday qualifying is often time more important than the actual race...

"I think a lot of teams were betting on a caution flag before the white flag."

That's normally a pretty good bet.
