CBS poll: Plurality of Americans now disapprove of decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan

An addendum to Larry’s item this morning, which correctly diagnosed Obama’s appearance in Hiroshima as a bit more apologetic than the White House wants observers to believe. If you come to the site of an act that ended four years of horrendous war and insist that a “moral revolution” is needed to ensure that such acts aren’t repeated, you’re obviously making a statement about the morality of that original act. If you want to protest guns, you don’t do it at a place where someone once used one to defend himself successfully from a threat. You do it at a site where one was used without justification, to murder.

But I digress. After decades of Americans defending Truman’s decision to drop the bomb, we’ve now had enough population churn to finally move the numbers. People who lived through the meat grinder of World War II are dying off, replaced by people who’ve never lived in a country that has a military draft, let alone one that might have placed them in the middle of a maelstrom like X-Day. Go figure that when Gallup polled the public in August 1945 on whether they approved of the development of the atomic bomb, fully 69 percent said yes. Fast-forward 71 years and here we are.

The figures among women are ridiculous.

Why are women so more apt to disapprove of the decision to use the a-bomb on Japan? Do they not know history?

These numbers are unbelievable, and very probably reflect a shameful neglect by most Americans of American history during WWII (due essentially to educational & civil subversion).

It's an indictment of civilization that the people of any country, let alone this one, could be so historically ignorant that they would be morally oblivious to the real-world ramifications of having not used the atom bomb!

You want to know why the United States dropped the atom bomb on Japan, b---hes?

Because not dropping it would have been magnitudes worse for the US, Japan, and the entire world, that's why. And that undeniable historical truth will not change with the passing of any amount of time, nor will it's moral legitimacy ever be obfuscated by historical revisionist propaganda...

The women polled really disturb me. Do they not understand the consequences for the men in their life??

I am a woman, but At least I had a father was a boy during WWII....raced down every morning to get the newspaper to find out the news (he was only about nine).
He explained to me how many lives were saved, American lives and many others, by the bomb.
He recently died and would be disgusted by what Obama has done here.

Some combination of ignorance and brainwashing. We had no choice but to nuke Japan. No choice. All anybody needs to know is that Japan didn’t surrender after Hiroshima. How stupid is that. You just had a major industrial city vaporized in a single incident and your response is, “Oh yeah, well let’s see you guys do that again!”

So we did. Japan was 100% the cause of Nagasaki. Idiots.

The Japanese were demonic savages. What nation would force women to work as sex slaves for the Japanese military? The Japanese Imperial Army used chemical weapons like nausea red gas, chlorine, phosgene and Lewisite. Mustard yellow gas was also used against Chinese troops in 1939. The Unit 731 led by Shirō Ishii subjected prisoners to experiments of amputations, vivisection and biological weapons testing. The Manila massacre was one of rape and mass killing. It is estimated that 100,000 died by the hands of the Imperial Japanese military. One could go on with a long list of the crimes against humanity the Japanese waged in the region. To point at the United States is another example of moral equivalence the Left in the United States has repeatedly used to advance their agenda.

Gee! I wonder if they broke the (so called) study down into age groups?

Us, age 50 and more, fully understand why we dropped the bomb. Those younger have had progressive political indoctrination in our public schools to the point that they really don’t understand anything about WW-II...only that America killed a lot of innocent people who loved us and only wanted to be left alone.

Vietnam came along (a war we never had any reason to fight) and due to sensitivity, rights of citizens over there, and simply political correctness, we WASTED thousands of lives and mutilated the bodies of thousands more, FOR NOTHING!

Obama has followed the same PC path as that of Vietnam and the same result has occurred...more maimed and dead bodies of American soldiers along with absolutely no accomplishments what-so-ever.

I get very angry when today’s society looks at the dropping of the atomic bomb and cry and weep over all of the dead japs and say that we were wrong and need to apologize to Japan, but thanks to our educational system, news system, and political correctness run amuck, they are woefully unaware of just how brutal, savage and inhumane these Japs were to captured American and Australian troops...and to those they occupied too. All of that has been erased in the name of PC and the race to end all VIOLENCE.

Can’t we all just get along? The pillow fight cry of the timid and weak today.

The answer to your statement is:

Many, many of the women who disagree with dropping the bomb would not be here today if we had not.

Why? It’s very simple...the lineage of their family would had stopped on the island of Japan. They would have never been born because their grandfathers and some grandmothers would have ended their life on the sands of that island.

Of course, they are too stupid to realize that fact.

It’s really a useless question since its ancient history to today’s generation.

But given the same circumstances Americans would kick ass again

"In the initial days following the Japanese surrender, the United States public overwhelmingly supported the use of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A Gallup poll taken in August 1945 found that 85 percent of Americans supported the bombings, 10 percent were opposed to them, and 5 percent had no opinion. Initial critics of the bombings were largely pacifists, a number of nuclear scientists, and some religious leaders and political commentators."

It must be noted that the American people don’t really matter. The usa of atomic weapons and for that matter all weapons is delegated to our military and the president

It is certain that TV networks have no say in the matter either.
