Congress Must Censure President Obama over Hiroshima Speech
Breitbart ^ | 27 May 2016 | Joel B. Pollak

Posted on 05/27/2016 7:32:28 AM PDT by mandaladon

President Barack Obama told the world on Friday in Hiroshima that the American decision to drop nuclear bombs on Japan in 1945 arose from humanity’s worst instincts, including “nationalist fervor or religious zeal.”

The war that ended in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he said, “grew out of the same base instinct for domination or conquest that had caused conflicts among the simplest tribes, an old pattern amplified by new capabilities and without new constraints.”

The speech — delivered on the eve of Memorial Day weekend — was billed by the White House as anything but an apology, but Obama’s words betrayed his true sentiments.

Obama, a native of Honolulu who grew up near Pearl Harbor, said nothing about the fact that Japan started the war; nothing about the fact that the Japanese were responsible for the slaughter of millions of civilians throughout Asia and the Pacific; nothing about the fact that the Japanese refused to surrender after hundreds of thousands had already been killed in conventional bombing.

Obama implied that Americans had not yet considered the human cost of the atomic bomb: we had to “force ourselves to imagine the moment the bomb fell” and “force ourselves to feel the dread of children confused by what they see,” he said.

He described the moral dilemmas of nuclear warfare as if no president, and no American, had considered them before. But he left out the moral case for ending the war, and the hundreds of thousands of deaths avoided because of Hiroshima.

After the war it is the American who rebuilt the nation of Japan

Japan had Douglas MacArthur, we got Eisenhower.

Nearly 50 years ago some local station in Missouri ran a ten or twelve part series with Truman, he really did not like MacArthur.

All of the conservatives, including me, thought Harry Truman would be a poor president. That he would be controlled by the gangsters in his home state.

He turned out to be one of the best. We will never know how many American lives he saved, but it is obvious from the history of Iwo Jima that many many thousands of Americans would have died and maybe as many Japanese as were killed by the bomb.

We have before us now a president who illustrates perfectly Truman's courage. We have a president who is AFRAID, a coward who will not even take appropriate action against local criminals, much less criminal rulers.

I really believe that were a nuclear armed foreign power to attack the US, obummer would make the Vichy French look like real warriors.

He would surrender the 1st day and put on his Muslim robes.

That's one reason why MacArthur was given Japan. It kept him out of US politics.

This is the same man who made a horrible agreement with the Iranians and lied about it to the world. Perhaps ground zero for the first Iranian nuclear ICBM will be his new Mosque Mansion.

If the Japanese had the Atomic Bomb first, they would have used it. The Nazis would have done the same.

War is hell.

For good reason: MacArthur was ten times as smart as Truman.

including “nationalist fervor or religious zeal.”

You mean like a militarily-backed version of Shintoism?

IMO, both were great leaders but with entirely different styles. MacArthur liked formality, fanfare, cameras, the limelight. Truman was informal, simple and didn’t like limelight. MacArthur’s headlines I am sure, just rubbed Truman raw.

Exactly. Eisenhower was always a political General never a fighter like Patton or MacArthur. Truman went into great detail about MacArthur's attempt to save China from Mao and he did not like that. We haven't won a war/police action since.

Memories fade and get replaced by news articles and movies so some of the things I remember may not have actually happened.

There has been SO MUCH MORE THAT IS FAR WORSE that the Congress has needed to take 0 to task for.

Instead, we have Ryan passing 0’s budget and 0’s homo contractor requirements.
