Washington Post: The Purpose of Gun Registration is Gun Confiscation

New Yorkers Burn Gun Registration Forms

There was a recent domestic shooting in Maryland.  The presumed perpetrator was a federal law enforcement officer.  He is reported to have killed his estranged wife and two other people.   His wife had a protective order against him in March, and the Federal Protective Service, of which Mr. Tordil was a member, took his service firearm and seven other firearms.

This was in Maryland, which requires handguns to be registered. From the washingtonpost.com:

Sheriff’s deputies can’t be faulted for not knowing about that gun because, thanks to the national gun lobby and the cowardice of Congress, there is no federal database of who owns what guns. Only a handful of states, including Maryland, have registries of varying thoroughness. This case underscores why law enforcement should be able to know whether a person prohibited from possessing guns has surrendered all their firearms.

This is an official Washington Post editorial, not one merely written for the paper.

Consider what the Post is stating.  They are stating that the purpose of gun registration is to facilitate the confiscation of firearms.

The fact that this federal law enforcement officer was already violating the law by not registering the Glock pistol,  is not considered important.

The purpose of gun registration has always been to facilitate the confiscation of the guns at some later time.  That is what Chief Constable Colin Greenwood, who first studied the purpose of British gun laws at Cambridge, determined.  The registration system initiated in the 1920’s was never effective in reducing crime, and actually diverted scarce police resources.

From A Study of Armed Crime and Firearms Control in England and Wales by Colin Greenwood, page 246:

It’s clearly defined in NY law.

Now, keep in mind that NY clearly defines rifles as not firearms, so be aware that they’re not defining things like regular citizens do.

I suppose too it would depend on whether they were being shot at

That alone would be key and I concur 101%. But keep in mind that there will be two sides of the story before a campaign such as confiscation would begin. All engaged in such an operation will realize that they WILL be in a war zone and that incoming projectiles will NOT be of rubber compositionBottomline is govt agents simply cant be trusted without verification be it LE or military

I concur 201% on hat statement. Especially any entity that has anything to do with education as they sure have failed miserably. The perils of dumbing down America are sure prevelant.

Tax reform, immigration reform, criminal reform,,,, to hell with those,,,, time for government reform and TERM LIMITS.

GUN REGISTRATION EXPLAINED BACK IN 1976 BY THE TOP DOG GUN GRABBER.

Nelson T. ‘Pete’ Shields
Founder of Handgun Control, Inc.

“I’m convinced that we have to have federal legislation to build on. We’re going to have to take one step at a time, and the first step is necessarily — given the political realities — going to be very modest.

Of course, it’s true that politicians will then go home and say, ‘This is a great law. The problem is solved.’ And it’s also true that such statements will tend to defuse the gun-control issue for a time.

So then we’ll have to strengthen that law, and then again to strengthen that law, and maybe again and again.

Right now, though, we’d be satisfied not with half a loaf but with a slice. Our ultimate goal — TOTAL CONTROL of handguns in the United States — is going to take time.

My estimate is from seven to ten years. The problem is to slow down the increasing number of handguns sold in this country. The second problem is to get them all registered.

And the final problem is to make the possession of all handguns and all handgun ammunition — except for the military, policemen, licensed security guards, licensed sporting clubs, and licensed gun collectors — TOTALLY ILLEGAL.”

-Pete Shields, Chairman and founder, Handgun Control Inc., “A Reporter At Large: Handguns,” The New Yorker, July 26, 1976, 57-58

“Yes, I’m for an outright ban [on handguns].”

-Pete Shields, Chairman emeritus, Handgun Control, Inc., 60 Minutes interview
(Now you can add rifles and shotguns to the list.)

For those who may still doubt, back in the 1980s HCI decided to go after semi-auto military style rifles along with handguns.

I call it “infringement one drop at a time!” In time we will wonder “where the guns went?”

Wake up, America!

The bill of rights is under attack and, once eliminated, we will be slaves to a wicked master, the government we thought was benevolent.

I submit that only fools “are already registered.”

And to prove their (meaning the anti 2nd amendment crowd) loyalty to their cause, most acknowledge the fact that they will not live long enough to see confiscation. Only through education and love for our children can we prevent history from repeating itself. I do not wish my daughters to have to defend against:

Another Holocost or Kristallnacht

Please define what an "assault weapon" is.

It has about as much meaning as: fair share of taxes, and comprehensive immigration reform.

Absolutely. Anybody who thinks the military would resist gun confiscation is not living in the real world, IMO.

If you purchase from a dealer or if your transfer goes through a dealer you can pretty well be sure you’re now the “registered” owner of that gun. ATF agents have been carrying copy machines into dealer’s stores for years for the simple purpose of copying the 4473s.

Never buy from or through a dealer if you want the transaction to be kept from the government. I know, you’ll get a few stolen guns by buying this way but unless you’re a crook, you’re performing a public service by getting it off the street. That gun is going to be sold and it’ll be sold to a gang-banger to be used in another crime if you don’t buy it first.

Reminds me of a post I read once, here on FR.

A tactic for dealing with this sort of bureaucratic diktat is to give them some, but not all of the information they require. A typo, an obscured answer, missing a number in the zip code, etc.

Document that you sent the info in a timely manner, of course– use the post office and get a return receipt requiring a signature.

If everyone did this two or three times you’d grind the system to a halt.

Lie. Defy. Do not comply.

Laws are only workable if they are respected.

Yep. Remember Boston after the marathon bombing? Government agent/employees will follow orders, lawful or not.

NO COMPROMISE

Amen. Compromising with bad or evil policy is like adding a little sewage to your drinking water.

If LE is responsible for confiscation, I trust they realize what the ramifications will be?

The ramifications SHOULD BE the befalling of "accidents" to (or the disappearance of) THOSE WHO GIVE THE ORDERS.

While New Jersey defines air rifles as firearms. Go figure.

“When my son was in they talked about this as a ‘what if’. Many said they wouldnt but still a good number said theyd follow whatever orders were given.”

Rather than speculating, we have real world examples to study.

When Qaddhafi gave the order to his army to fire in Libyans, 75% of the military deserted and returned to their provinces to protect their families, cleaning out armories as they traveled home.

What remained were Libyan cadets (boots) and Qaddhafi’s elite guard and senior officer corps.

To make a long story short, the inexperienced cadets, led by senior officers, didn’t fight well. The army deserters connected up with the provincial militias (equivalent to our state guards) and slaughtered Qaddhafi’s diminished army by the thousands.

So you’re equating their military to ours in an attempt to predict an outcome?

They seem to have as much appetite for tyranny as their masters.

The real question, do the have the appetite for lead?
