A 5-year-old LaPlace girl died Saturday (May 21) after she accidentally shot herself while playing with a handgun, the St. John the Baptist Sheriff's Office said. Haley Moore was shot in the chest at the home of her father, Eric Moore, on Country Club Drive and brought to a local hospital where she died.

Neighbor Joy Ursin spoke with Moore Sunday morning said he is devastated. "He's faulting himself," she said.

Of Harley, Ursine said, "She was full of life, a very spunky little girl. She was just a firecracker."

Police have not offered any additional information since Saturday, but here's a recap of what we know as of Sunday morning:

• Haley Moore was visiting her father, Eric Moore, this weekend. He and the 5-year-old's mother recently divorced, according to neighbors. Sheriff's Office Lt. Greg Baker said said Eric Moore was in the shower when the shooting occurred. Neighbors said he was getting ready to take Haley and her two older siblings out to eat and they later planned to see the "Angry Birds" movie.

• Neighbors said Eric Moore is a military veteran who served in Iraq. He was known to keep weapons in his house, but neighbors said he regularly stressed that they were safely stored. The family has lived on Country Club Drive for about four years.

I hope the politicians do not use this for political purposes but that’s like hoping a baker does not use flour.

Obviously not true.

Obama and the democrats climb upon the still warm bodies as they use the victims to further their leftist agenda.

Just devastated?

He should be in prison.

5 years old is old enough to be taught about gun safety. I'll bet that she didn't even know about guns, and that's probably why she's gone.

How in the world did the father allow this? At least f the girl had been educated, she might have known not to touch a gun, even if it somehow DID get within reach of her.

I realize that I'm just speculating, but this tragedy obviously could have been avoided in several different ways.

Having said that, I don't believe in punishing parents for a horrible accident such as this. There's nothing worse than the grief they're already experiencing, and there's consequently no need for society to pile on...

Police said the handgun that killed Haley Moore was found "unsecured" in the house. Charges have not been filed against Eric Moore, who told deputies he left the .45-caliber pistol on his kitchen table...

Sad - she was a cute kid.

He should fault himself.

You can never get lax with gun safety when little children are around. Unfortunately this momentary lapse of reason resulted in a child’s death.

Many years ago, my husband’s grandfather had his handgun
stored on the top shelf of the closet. Their eldest boy,
5 yrs. old at the time, climbed up on something & reached
the gun. HE SHOT THE NEW BABY GIRL IN THE NECK ACCIDENTALLY.
They all jumped up & carried her to the hospital. (The
boy was left alone at home in all the chaos. He hid behind
the sofa; thinking he had killed his baby sister.) The
baby did not die; but the boy spent the rest of his life
sick with a bowel disease (from the stress probably). He
died at 9 yrs. of age. His name was Robert King.

Smellometer is creeping up.

So he had all week to prep for weekend with kids so he gets them and then decides to take a shower? Leaving them unattended? With a loaded pistol on the kitchen table?!??!

My kids knew about gun safety at a young age. I had taken my daughter shooting when she was around four and bought her a cricket 22lr. I could leave a gun out and my daughter would not touch it. My son, who is younger than my daughter, is a different story. I taught him gun safety but I kept everything locked up when he came along. I did not take him shooting until he was ten. I did not trust him to listen to me.

Even without that specific law his actions would probably add up to negligent homicide in most states.

I have a lot of questions my self.

However, last night was Saturday night and crimes do increase. Leaving it on the table could mean he had set it down on the table but covered it up by some means. I have done this myself. If I set a weapon down and leave a room I always cover it. News paper, dish rag etc.

It’s not like LaPlace is a town where crime is so rampant that you need to be packing a .45 with one in the chamber, ready to go.

Some people are just not playing with a full deck.
