Alice Springs surrounds rocked by magnitude 6.1 earthquake
ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) ^ | 21st May 2016

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1, unusually powerful for Australia, has struck outside of Alice Springs.

The quake hit at 4:14am, 125 kilometres west of Uluru, at a depth of about 10 kilometres, according to Geoscience Australia.

Two aftershocks measuring 3.8 and 3.4 were recorded in the hour afterwards, and senior seismologist Johnathan Bathgate said more were expected.

He said there had been activity near the site before, with a 5.6 recorded slightly further west in 1999.

Geoscience Australia said the main tremor could have been felt as far as 507 kilometres from its epicentre, although any damage would be limited to a 40-kilometre radius.

No injuries or damage has been recorded and the Bureau of Meteorology said there was no risk of it causing a tsunami.

The nearest Indigenous community settlements were well over 100 kilometres away from the earthquake's epicentre.

We don't get many sizeable earthquakes in Australia - fortunately this one was in an area that is pretty much uninhabited.

You have my sympathy . Here in Kumamoto , Japan , we had 6.8 and 7.2 on 4/14 and 4/16 killers , as you no doubt heard on the news . We’ve had 1600 aftershocks since ! Feeling shellshocked .

I'm several thousand miles away.

But I would like to know just what's going on down there...

Ah... "A Town Like Alice"... one of my favorite books.

We have friends who lived in Alice until returning to NZ.

You are a fortunate man! "A bonzer town!"

That must’ve shaken things up at NSA and the Australian Signals Directorate...

I’ll bet everyone employed at Pine Gap felt that one. Uninhabited area indeed. Its only the largest NSA,CIA,NRO installation on earth. They ran most if not all of the “Desert Storm” communications through there. (Google Pine Gap photos)

I’m too old, but I always thought it would be a good (hard) road trip from Melbourne to Darwin via Alice Springs just to get an idea of how BIG it is.

I have two old taped films, part 1 and part 2, of A Town Like Alice. It was on TV many years ago and I loved it so I taped it. Will look for the book. Didn’t realize it was from a book. Bryan Brown was so good in the movie.

I agree. That would be an interesting trip to do once. I am 72 but I think I could do it. Maybe travel only 8 hours a day at most.

Never got to Alice Springs but I *have* been to a town called Broken Hill.It was early March (still summer Down Under) and it was 40C (about 105F) one day.My first time ever experiencing 100 degrees plus.I also saw my first ever Aborigine there.

On an entirely different note whenever I hear mention of Alice Springs I think of one of my favorite "historical" TV series,"A Town Like Alice".I'd recommend it very highly to anyone who's never seen it.In fact, not having watched it myself for several years I think I'll dust it off right now!

This earthquake's epicentre was about 270 miles from Pine Gap. Reference is made to Alice Springs (which Pine Gap is near) simply because there's so little out there that a settlement hundreds of miles away is the only one people are likely to have heard of. The area where the quake was centered really is almost totally uninhabited. It's unlikely there was a single human being within 50 miles - Kaltukatjara is the nearest town about 60 miles away with a population of about 300.

People at Pine Gap could have felt it but it wouldn't have been all that strong at that point. When I talked about it being fortunate that the area is uninhabited, I'm talking about the radius in which significant damage could have occurred - and it's unlikely there was anything in that range.

Yes, the tension in the San Andreas fault in California is due for a very radical slippage.

Mother earth is ready to shake things up a bit. Alice Springs is hardly on a slip fault is it?

Got me tricked, it's in the centre of the continent, can't have anything to do with continental plates or subduction, which I think is a lot of BS anyway. I'll do some research.
