Ryan strikes Puerto Rico debt deal with Obama administration

...Paul Ryan has reached a tentative deal with the Treasury Department on a rescue package to ease Puerto Rico's debt crisis, according to House Natural Resources Chairman Rob Bishop, who has been leading negotiations.

“We are moving forward — there is a deal,” the Utah Republican said Wednesday afternoon, adding that legislative text of the deal would be released later on Wednesday.

Details of that deal were released by Bishop’s committee Wednesday night, when the bill was introduced.

The agreement represents a breakthrough on an issue that has been stuck in congressional limbo for months. Ryan (R-Wis.) said last year that helping Puerto Rico restructure its multi-billion-dollar debt would be a top priority for the first quarter of 2016.

But conservatives balked at Bishop’s initial proposal, following a series of ads that labeled the measure a “bailout.” Democrats also refused to support that earlier deal because of a minimum wage decrease included in the measure. Congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle have pushed back on the bailout label, and the bill expressly prohibits federal taxpayer funds from paying down Puerto Rico’s debt.

This is why Paul Ryan is hated so much. He is so out of his league and a weasel. You can be sure that if Obama is for it, America is getting the royal screwing.

You can also be sure that the likes of Goldman Sachs are lurking in the weeds ready to line their pockets with more printed money on yet another bailout.

Ryan is making Trump's case in spades while showing himself as a useless useful idiot for the establishment class for all of America to see.

BEHIND THE CURTAINS:

It is a PAYOFF for Romney, and therefore
is racketeering by Ryan, the Bishop’s little toad.

Ryan's "deal" was with Wall Street. They didn't want to lose their shirts on bad debts. It IS a BAILOUT - no matter what Ryan or Obama says.

The only thing Paul Ryan seems to be good at is Insider Trading, double crossing veterans, and supporting the demon possessed Obama.

Wow.

I wonder if Trump will lay into Ryan for this.

As I said before, there’s a reason Ryan looks like Judas.

At the risk of getting flamed (I know Ryan is one the bette noirs on FR) I am going to reserve judgement until I get a chance to read the details of this. The Puerto Rican debt crisis is serious and if they go tits up it could send shock waves through the government bond market and might push the country back into recession. It’s an incredibly complicated situation. I am curious as to what they are actually proposing. It’s pretty clear that PR just doesn’t have enough money to cover their debt. Bankruptcy would seem to me to be the reasonable solution, but again this could have dangerous effects and it would require amending the US Bankruptcy Code.

Puerto Rican economics is what happens when a government runs out of other people’s money.

I’m sorry; this is just state sponsored robbery. The financial team that arranged the ‘bail out’ of PR’s debt charged through the nose, and investors demanded a very high rate of return due to default risk.

The DEFAULT has been priced in, PR should DEFAULT. Otherwise, all those guys can pull out their wallets and return the extra fees and interest that they collected.

Did I say this was just one robbery? It was multiple. Let it fail, pick up the pieces.

Don’t tell me let me guess. He’s just going to take it out of Social Security and Medicare and the VA and send it to PR.

If this deal goes through every state that is on the edge will line up and demand their own bailout.

And you can be 100% sure that if Obama is for this, it is really, really bad.

This deal needs to be killed.

I noticed that until I carefully read it and realized the writer was referring to the chairman of some committee referenced poorly.

I agree that amendment of the Bankruptcy Code to allow Puerto Rico to deal with this mess in Bankruptcy Court like any state is the reasonable solution. Any less would pretty much force Puerto Rico to apply for statehood, and the Democrats would put that through the Senate as soon as they get their next majority there.

IMO it is also preferable, for good policy reasons, to give Puerto Rico the same options as any state.
