Trump says ‘sanctuary cities’ should lose funding
Conservative Firing Line ^ | May 18, 2016 | Dave Workman

Posted on 05/18/2016 12:21:01 PM PDT by Theo

In an on-air interview with KVI-AM’s morning host John Carlson in Seattle on Wednesday, presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump blasted the idea of so-called “sanctuary cities,” and said that as president, he would withhold funding from those cities.

He called such cities “a haven for criminals.”

“We have to have law and order in our country,” Trump said. “We have no law and order. When you look at the people who are pouring in and the borders are so porous.

“I want people to come into the country a hundred percent,” he explained, “but they have to come in legally. They have to come in through a process, and what’s happening now is out of control. It’s totally out of control.”

During the 20-minute-plus conversation, Trump and Carlson covered many subjects including minimum wage, trade and airport security. The interview came more than a week after Trump held two rallies in the Evergreen State and on the morning after he was interviewed by Fox News’s Megyn Kelly, with whom he had a high-profile feud, which may have been put to rest during her special. He promised Carlson that he would not surrender the state but would fight for its votes as the election approaches.

This might go against prevailing conventional wisdom because Washington is considered a “blue” state likely to be carried by whoever the Democrat nominee is. Right now, it appears that Hillary Rodham Clinton will be that person, although Sen. Bernie Sanders trounced her in the March Democratic caucuses and beat her in Oregon’s primary.

Withholding federal funds from Seattle and other “sanctuary cities” will not go over well with the liberal administrations in those Democrat strongholds. Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles are all “sanctuary cities,” and they are dominated by Democrats. Seattle even has a socialist member of the city council.

“We don’t need sanctuary cities,” Trump observed. “We need strong borders.”

If any state even had ONE sanctuary city, I'd cut funding for the entire state.

Furthermore, I'd send Federal marshals to arrest the mayors of these cities, prosecute them for treason and ask for the death penalty.

Americans are being murdered every day by illegals, and these mayors invite this illegal criminal behavior. It's time they are held accountable.

“Seattle even has a socialist member of the city council.”

And a statue of Vladimir Lenin by the University District.

Oregon is a “sanctuary state” basically....hope he’s serious. And, maybe, just maybe, we’ll get a GOP Governor this year???

Trump is not a serious candidate. He’s only in it to throw it to Jeb!

...

This means he has core beliefs and isn’t pandering. All the more reason to vote for him.

No Sanctuary Cities. No Trump. The Progressives have painted themselves in a corner..

Their policies have created their own ‘monster’ and assist greatly toward their eventual undoing.

When society implodes, you get San Francisco or Seattle.. and a Reagan,, or a Trump. Partyy on!!

Wow, loss of federal funding AND having a 15 dollar an hour minimum wage? Sucks to be a property owner in those 4 cities...

Hillary says sanctuary cities are good cuz they protect people.

I think Congress and a few states are seeing things a little differently.

This election is all about the citizens finally turning their backs on politicians, and seeking anyone who will actually try to fix the country's many, and rapidly worsening, problems. I supported Cruz most of the way, mostly because I believed (and still do) that he was the most constitutionally-knowledgeable candidate and that he understood the need to restore constitutional principles. As time wore on though, I began to get a gut feeling that he might actually be more talk than action, especially as I watched his campaign degenerate into clear self-promotion above all else.

I have no such qualms about Trump. I am confident that he will actually DO something about the problems (as do a great many others, which is the primary reason he is so popular). We've reached a point where things have gotten so bad the people have tuned out the talkers and theoreticians, and are looking for someone they trust to finally take action and to FIGHT BACK. The GOPe decision to once again do nothing to oppose Obama's agenda, even after being handed both houses of Congress was the last straw that drove so many to Trump. I'm very optimistic and confident that he won't squander the good faith of the people as did the crass politicians of the GOPe.

Donald Trump blasted the idea of so-called “sanctuary cities,” and said that as president, he would withhold funding from those cities.

I would go a step further. I would withhold funding from the states where these sanctuary cities are located. Put the onus on the Governors of those states to keep their cities in line.

I want to throw this in all my liberal friends faces. Over and over I had the conversation about how Obama’s overreach and expansion of the power of the Presidency would eventually come back to bite the liberals. They laughed and said no Republican will ever hold the Presidency again.

Remember how conservatives used to say ‘be careful what powers you vest in the Presidency lest they be used against you’? The same argument Obama’s making about refusing to follow the transgender bathroom “guidance” lest you lose federal funding can be made against sanctuary cities.

Let me be clear: It’s not a power the President should have at all but it’s there. If he wins, Trump should absolutely use it to end the “sanctuary city” farce.

“...Aren’t they defying federal law, “

Totally. In fact, it’s called a sanctuary city because they’re enabling sanctuary from federal immigration law!
