One of the most fruitful observations about politics is that it flows downhill from culture, which launches a variety of speculations about how examining specific cultural products enables us better to understand current political developments. During a year dominated by flamboyant poseurs bombarding our fair land with catchphrases and sanity-challenged promises, it seems that the concept of “madness” has few competitors to guide us through this most unusual political jungle. After all, just what is one supposed to make of an unindicted felon, an infantile socialist, and a “high energy” master of non sequitur phrases and provocative policies, all competing for the highest office in the land? Isn’t this just a bit mad?
Actually, it isn’t, at least not compared to other political events that reek of madness informed by totalitarian proclivities. Without doing a Clintonesque probing into the connotation of simple expressions, we still are compelled to ask about the meaning of the word “madness.” Here’s where culture comes into play, in this case with an essay by Charlotte Perkins Gilman titled “The Yellow Wallpaper”, which was based on an incident in her life and was published in 1892.

Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.

“...madness”? No...it is just LIB moonbats being LIB moonbats. To think otherwise is to probably perform a “hate” crime.
It is, as others, notably the Dalrymple reference above, have pointed out: it is not so much the insanity itself that is the issue, it is the ability of its progenitors themselves to force their target audience to accept it as the new norm, that is the issue. This is an act of pure political aggression and those progenitors know it.
The "bathroom" dilemma, for example. It is a fight that the Left picked deliberately, not so much as to allow the mentally challenged access to the crapper of their choice as to allow the activists the ability to force the issue. It was an opportunity to call those goaded into reaction "bigots". It was an opportunity to stifle and intimidate dissent, and so far, although it has had very mixed success, (the less so for having been announced as complete victory in the complicit media), it has, at least, been able to commandeer the front page. That in itself is a degree of victory.
But it is merely a distraction, a victory in battle that is likely to cost them the war, for war it is, and it succeeds best if the victims don't recognize it. And we've had our noses rubbed in it. The reaction - well, the reaction in the form of one Donald Trump is one that horrifies them. They're not pretending, they never thought it would come to this.
Other examples abound. The ability of criminal agitation in the person of Black Lives Matter comes to mind. This is the black KKK come to full fruition, with a federally-guaranteed access directly to the soft underbelly of academia, ground long prepared by the Left and now pretty much ripe for harvest. Again, state-sanctioned criminal activity, violence, intimidation, with little recourse to the compromised enforcement of law. That, too, is pure political aggression, and like most bullies its prosecutors are astonished and infuriated at resistance.
Hence the insanity. Again, it is not so much the demand that the target believe three impossible things before breakfast, but the ability to force him to do so or at least to forcibly prevent him from expressing any reservation under penalty of being branded a bigot, social ostracism, and legal penalties such as the loss of job, business, personal fortune or reputation. It is a decades-long Cold War that has run its course and absent a complete and convincing electoral repudiation, leaves only the recourse of violent resistance. And the difficulty with the latter is that the agitators historically have no idea when the threshold has been crossed until the tumbrels start to roll.
Foundations of social behavior built upon relative standards is a house built on quicksand. Foundations of social behavior built upon absolutes, such as God, is a house built on bedrock.

Thing is, Trump is upending the design. The designers are starting to panic.
