When your doctor asks you if you own a gun

There have been laws passed on this subject in Florida, always to the great consternation of liberals and gun control advocates, but it remains an open question in much of the country. Should your doctor be asking you during the course of a routine check-up whether or not you or any family members have a gun in your house? And what if they do just come out and ask? Ben Guarino at the Washington Post brings us some information about a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine which suggests that nothing should hold doctors back from inquiring. You know… just for your own good.

I’ll say no with my LCP in my front pocket.

I was asked this question on a form a couple of years back when I was seeing a different doctor. I answered that of course I own many guns. I think I even exaggerated a bit.

When your doctor asks you if you own a gun

NYFB DOC! Is the response to give.

I’ve never been asked. One didn’t have to ask because once I went to see him after an unfortunate incident with some defective Ammunition.

It was just some burns and he thought it was pretty funny

If I was ever asked, my response would be “Next question please.”

“NYFB DOC!”

None of our FFFFFin business?

Why do you ask doctor? Do you know the United States Constitution? ... the right of free speech, and the right to bear arms ... and more...

It made America GREAT!!!

“I don’t own a gun because, if I did, I’m afraid I’d be inclined to use it against health care professionals who ask intrusive, irrelevant questions.”

In the Big 10, the commandment is “Thy shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor”. Doesn't really cover white lies if your wife asks if this dress makes her look fat. Doesn't cover telling a thief that you don't keep cash in the house.

And while Jesus said to render unto Caesar, the things that are Caesar's, my question is why should Caesar be the only one to make that call. Not that I cheat on my taxes. All my income is salary and 401K, there's no room.

Again, being legalistic here, Jesus basically said it was lawful to pay taxes, but HE DID NOT SAY that it was unlawful to refuse.

I will probably get some flak for this statement. If so, I will reply as I have time.

We were assigned a new doctor (new to us, not in age) fifteen years ago or so who asked the kids if there was a gun in the house. Well, duh, this is Texas and daddy’s a LEO. The kids were rolling their eyes and were very pointed with her. Needless to say, we complained and got another doctor.

“Do you own any guns?”

No, I’m a blade man. I find knives much more...satisfying.

The best answer to the doctor or the hospital or the police is always no, IMHO.

Very simple response: Why are you concerned about gun ownership when John Hopkins University estimates that medical error kills 250,000 people a year (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3429657/posts). From a statistical standpoint, we are much safer spending time with people who own guns, then we are with medical professionals.

The question is part of the electronic medical records template per the AMA.

My doctor told me about taking a concealed carry class in Arizona. Then he told me he thinks anyone who doesn’t have a doesn’t have a gun to protect his house and family is an idiot.

It actually doesn’t matter what your doctor thinks or feels about the question, it is what he enters into the medical-governmental-insurance database that counts.

I’d love to know a way to answer without answering or having my family file flagged for future use by the gestapo....

______________

The answer is no.

And car seats are none of their business either.

I’m a doc. I’ll never ask. Most won’t.

If ever asked, I’m responding that way too.

And if any Jews find they have to hide in my attic, they’re more than welcome. I have enough firearms to accommodate.
