California ballot measure blamed for shoplifting jump

Perry Lutz says his struggle to survive as a small businessman became a lot harder after California voters reduced theft penalties 1½ years ago.

About a half-dozen times this year, shoplifters have stolen expensive drones or another of the remote-controlled toys he sells (...). "It's just pretty much open season," Lutz said. "They'll pick the $800 unit and just grab it and run out the door."

Anything below $950 keeps the crime a misdemeanor — and likely means the thieves face no pursuit and no punishment, say retailers and law enforcement officials.

“So he needs to price those goods as $999. with a sign that says speak to the owner about a discount.”

It is smart. Price everything in the store less than $950 at $999. The other option is put everything under lock and key and if someone wants something, you open the lock and take it out for them. Like spray paint.

Play their game. Mark up the price to $960 and give all customers a coupon for $160 off. The price of goods is still the same but the customers all get the same price.

Idiot Californians. Whether one steals $950 or $0.01, it is still theft. Living in USSRWa (aka Washington State), I assume the idiots in this state will pass this type of law soon.

You are so right. Liberals’ mental and emotional powers were arrested in about seventh grade. That is why their attitudes are so juvenile. (Notice I did not say “sophomoric,” because that would give them too much credit.) So we have a bunch of junior high kids in adult’s bodies voting and electing people like our current President. Hm...does not bode well for the future. Actually quite depressing, no?

The riff-raff doing these rip offs don’t have Costco cards. That is much of the point of running a membership warehouse, keeping the riff-raff out. Then you know most of the shrinkage is employees.

The correct term is “adult children”.

It seems to me that business owners could develop any number of countermeasures against this, which they have to do right now, to counter crafty thieves.

I live in CA, and the way things are heading here, if any business did try to protect its product in any meaningful way, that business would be prosecuted for being racist against thieving scumbags.

CA controlled by demonic-rats is in the sewer.
Decent, law abiding people are the minority.

The steady decline in independent business puzzles analysts.
