Pew study sees a shrinking middle class in major US cities

WASHINGTON (AP) -- In cities across America, the middle class is hollowing out.

A widening wealth gap is moving more households into either higher- or lower-income groups in major metro areas, with fewer remaining in the middle, according to a report released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center.

In nearly one-quarter of metro areas, middle-class adults no longer make up a majority, the Pew analysis found. That's up from fewer than 10 percent of metro areas in 2000.

Pew defines the middle class as households with incomes between two-thirds of median income and twice the median, adjusted for household size and the local cost of living. The median is midway between richest and poorest. By Pew's definition, a three-person household was middle class in 2014 if its annual income fell between $42,000 and $125,000.

Plenty of money in the ZIP codes around Washington DC... those folks are awash in money... spreading our money among themselves...

Invite in millions of third-world immigrants, then write stories about how “the middle class is shrinking.”

Expect lots of stories about how “infant mortality is on the rise in the United States” for the same reason. Those will be saved for the new President, though.

“Zero’s plan is working.”

Lol, beat me to it!

An economically independent middle class is the biggest threat to the fedgov and the dem party.

< Zero’s plan is working.

But soon he won’t have anymore money to hand out or use to operate his Marxist government. Libs never think out things to their full conclusion.

You would be surprised to know how broke the average family is living in the national capital region really is despite their incomes. Living good paycheck to paycheck. Same goes for the surrounding jurisdictions. They have ridden the property boom spending every tax dollar they can raise.

I suspect the area will not be immune to the next down leg of the great recession.

Health are costs have gone through the roof, so even if your income stayed the same the past five years, your disposable income declined substantially.

Looking at the total picture....many cities and their suburbs are constructing new “high income” housing that’s densely concentrated. How stupid and/or bought and paid for pols who approve of this stuff? There aren’t enough high-income folks to fill that housing. It’s going to be high-density enclaves of people pretty much under the thumb and dependent on services provided to them.

Having been born in Detroit long enough ago to remember a vibrant and flourishing city, and having seen what rat government and labor unions did to her, I hope I live to see the day when metro Washington, DC and Detroit share an equal level of prosperity.

That’s cold, but understandable.

When the going gets tough, most of these people won’t be able to figure out why their fridges are not filled with fresh food, let alone go out and survive.

At least half of the neighborhoods in Chicago that were middle-class in the ‘60’s are now free-fire zones.

And in some cases the Lefty tech-wiz nouveau riche latte-and-opera crowd moved in and radically gentrified the rest.

States need a way to kick profligate cities out of their state. Cities use the State to buy the vote of their citizens.
