Why we should welcome a real trial about slave reparations
American Thinker ^ | 05/11/2016 | John Massoud

Posted on 05/11/2016 7:41:45 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

For the past fifteen or so years, there has been a movement among some liberals to require that the descendents of former slaves be paid for the suffering of their ancestors. Conservatives have railed against this transfer of wealth, saying (rightly, one should add) that a person or entity cannot be held responsible for the actions of another person who has been dead for over 150 years. Lloyd’s of London was sued in 2004 by a group of descendents of African slaves, and the British court system ruled against their claim. There have been other claims made by the descendents of African slaves – all of these have been laughed out of court.

Conservatives also claim (again, correctly) that offering reparations helps to keep poorer African Americans in a perpetual state of victimhood. But conservatives should not only welcome the concept of a reparations trial, we should also be championing it. And in doing so, we would be providing what Barack Obama would call a “teachable moment” about the real history of slavery in not only the Western World, but also in the history of all mankind.

One should note that the Jesse Jacksons of the world have only been trying to get reparations against White European nations. But for this to work as a really teachable moment, it would have to be tried in a multinational court and consider the global scope of slavery. And “progressives” do not want this for the following reasons:

Liberals of all stripes have been trying to rewrite world history of many countries. Our liberal friends have tried to change the Holy Bible to say the descendents of Joseph were not slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt but were actually paid laborers.

What has this got to do with the lack of jobs for America’s middle class? People working at creating wealth don’t have time for this crap.

Besides, it was a black man who made a court case that established slavery as a legal ‘contract’ in the U.S.

I would take issue with discussing this in any court of law.

This subject is a subject to discuss as a seminar or as part of some round table discussion on C-Span.

To be in any sort of a court implies that someone somehow has legal liability for what happened hundreds of years ago.

And the liberals and our media would gloss over slavery which happened, even today, in other parts of the world, and focus on African slavery perpetrated by European peoples.

No thanks, I think this is a bad idea.

We don’t even need to go back to ancient civilizations to shut these reparation morons up.

Just tell them we’ll pay them reparations on the very same day they pay us back for 600,000 ancestors dying in a war to end slavery.

Of course the cause of the American Civil War was a lot more complicated than that, but considering the lack of decent education given to the reparation jerks, that’s all they know about it anyway. No need to delve too deeply into casus belli.

I think the idea is to determine who really needs to pay reparations.

As the article says:

The legal discovery that would accompany any slave reparations trial would have and make public that the Ottoman Empire kept “slave armies.” Note that we are now talking about Muslims or the ancestors of Muslims being responsible for not only the beginnings of slavery, but also for the word “slave” itself. Think of how much American students might have to be forced to learn.

The Dahomey nation rulers (now the African country of Benin) profited off the slave trade. In the 1840’s King Gezo said he would “do anything the British would want apart from giving up the slave trade.” We haven’t even touched on the number of African Americans who not only owned but also traded slaves.

IMHO, reparations should be paid by the black descendants of slavery to the families of the hundreds of thousands of Union soldiers who DIED or were horrible maimed and wounded fighting to free their slave ancestors.

This is a bad idea, because there would be no equal sides to it. It would be set up to basically justify why it should be paid out.

What about the muslims who rounded them up in the first place, and who are still involved in the slave trade? How about demanding reparations out of them?

Not all blacks are ancestors who were slaves. There should be NO reparations for any of them.

Is guilt passed down through the genes? Which is the guilt gene?

If there were one, then there is a 50% chance that it was passed on down to each generation. Meaning that everyone would have to have a DNA test.

If any of that were true, then I have zero chance of having that gene, since none of my ancestors were slaveholders.

If not a gene test, then what standard would they use to determine guilt or privilege? Skin color? Identifying as black? (Rachel Dolezal). Not having a discernible father? Not speaking English properly?

And suppose they steal money from all Whites and give each black $50,000. Will that shut them up? No. The blacks who aren’t born yet are entitled each to $50,000, so this will go on forever. Blacks would flock into the country and start collecting their $50,000.

So give up sovereignty and subject this country to foreign laws over something done in the past here, but in the present elsewhere.

I agree with you. I read the whole article, and many great points were made, but it should go NOWHERE near a court room - especially in today’s judiciary climate. WAY too many libs on the bench - and they would rule inadmissible a LOT of the information that would be critical to make a just case.

A fair number of my ancestors were held as slaves for 400 years and it took numerous acts of God to gain their freedom from the black Egyptians (ask Farrakhan about it). Four thousand years of compound interest or even just simple interest should be a fair amount. Plus legal fees and cost of the court of course.

We should give felons the choice of surrendering their citizenship, returning to Africa or South America (majority of crime committed by blacks and latinos) or spend time in a fence-less Alaskan wilderness prison. Give them $100,000.00 as an incentive....and if they come back, they get a firing squad.
