Donald Trump Won’t Rule Out Effort to Remove Paul Ryan as Convention Chairman

Updated, 9:56 a.m. | Donald J. Trump said he would not rule out an effort to remove Representative Paul D. Ryan as chairman of the Republican National Convention if he did not endorse Mr. Trump’s candidacy.

Mr. Trump stopped short of calling for Mr. Ryan, the speaker of the House, to step down from his convention role. But in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Mr. Trump said there could be consequences in the event that Mr. Ryan continued withholding his support.

“I will give you a very solid answer, if that happens, about one minute after that happens, O.K.?” Mr. Trump said. “There’s no reason to give it right now, but I’ll be very quick with the answer.”

Mr. Trump has shown little interest over the last few days in placating his critics inside the party, including Mr. Ryan. Mr. Ryan, a representative from Wisconsin, said on Thursday that he was not ready to endorse Mr. Trump, citing reservations about his political style and policy agenda. The two men are scheduled to meet privately in Washington next week.

But on “Meet the Press,” Mr. Trump struck a dismissive tone toward Mr. Ryan and responded with outright hostility to other Republican critics who have refused to back his campaign.

Jeb Bush, he said, was “not honorable” for breaking his promise to endorse the party’s nominee. Mitt Romney, he said, was “ungrateful” for the help Mr. Trump gave him in the 2012 election. Mr. Trump referred to Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina senator who said Friday he would never vote for Mr. Trump, as “this lightweight.”

Of Mr. Ryan, he said: “I’d like to have his support. But if he doesn’t want to support me, that’s fine, and we have to go about it.”

It will end with Ryan walking to the mics and endorsing Trump. But Trump will take Ryan out later, imo.

Paul Ryan thought he was pulling a cute one. When Ted Cruz ruined his little backroom gig with Mitt Romney....Ryan immediately stabbed Ted Cruz in the ribs and discarded him. Then came the Trump endorsement denial and a staged convention ruckus. Ryan would, of course, come out with the GOP establishment nomination for POTUS!!! Dummy, Ryan guessed wrong. Throwing your hat in the ring with a buffoon like Mitt Romney is not healthy to anyone’s political career!!! Why? Romney has no political jazz whatsoever!!! Paul Ryan...you fool you guessed wrong!!! And...you will pay a very high political price for your poor planning and backstabbing!!!

Do you think the convention is going to not be chaos? There is going to be utter mayhem outside that convention hall.

Chaos is coming. It has to come. The alternative is that much worse.

I love the way the Donald is sticking it to the press and the establishment. My suggestion for his next move is to announce that Monica Lewinsky is on his short list for V.P. .... and watch the slimy Clintons squirm !

Voters just put Trump ahead of all contenders. They were voting against ppl like Ryan, whom they put in, only to be disappointed. They see him as a disappointment as veep candidate, as finance head, taking money from veterans, and as speaker, worse than boehner, turncoat, giving in to Obama and while in the majority

The vote for Trump was a vote against Ryan and people like him. Voters just pushed the Republican Party into the hands of Trump.

Ryan in his arrogance cannot see that. But he is out. He has no support from the voters

He has no position from which to reject Trump. He is out. The blindness that some of these people in power have is amazing to see. Him, Rush, Levin, FOX, is something I am amazed to watch.

They are out. They have been shockingly lacking in wisdom, the very quality that got them where they were. Nowhere near enough people will listen to them now They’re all out of business it will be amazing to me to watch them still try to influence public opinion. They are all out. They can’t see it

The same mistake Rubio made. The Establishment is dead. Hitching ones wagon to it will be career ending.

I love it - Ryan tries to strong-arm Trump and Trump warns Ryan of consequences.

trump wasn't kidding when he retorted to Rubio's attempt to make him seem ball-less.....the man shows no fear.
