Trump says he’ll name running mate at convention

Donald Trump said Thursday that he will name his vice presidential pick at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this July.

Speaking in an interview with The Associated Press, Trump said that it was still early in the process to select a running mate, but that he would soon form a committee to begin vetting running mates.

“It is early — we just won yesterday,” Trump said. “I will announce it at the convention. A lot of people are interested.”

Trump has said he intends to pick a Republican with prior government experience.

Trump has not yet reached the number of delegates required to clinch the nomination, but now has a clear path to becoming the Republican standard-bearer after his remaining rivals, Ted Cruz and John Kasich, suspended their campaigns this week.

He absolutely needs to focus on getting firm 1237 delegates -- the GOPe cannot be trusted, they may still try to stab him in the back.

I completely agree.

100%.

Don’t take the GOP for granted. For one entire generation they have been selling out America. Every single one of them.

Trump is the very first person, who will stand up to them.

I have read a lot of concern today that Cruz is still trying to usurp delegates. But the basic equation of “if the republicans try to steal the nomination from Trump the entire party will be permanently destroyed” is still true. They’d still be nuts to try it.

Trump’s VP pick will be Jim Webb.

Now it will be on record so I can brag about my prescience.

I remember at one of his rallies he said that after what happened with Louisiana his eyes are wide open.

Just say no to Newt. I don’t know why people want him. He’s disgusting.

“...that Cruz is still trying to usurp delegates....”

Well, Cruz has no where to go but back to the Washington country club and living off of lobbyists and Wall Street favors. After watching what we did, nothing would surprise me.

Yes smart move by Trump. I agree what he says and take time to ponder the VP pick until convention time.

He is a political genius, with experience. Whatever his human flaws, Newt Gingrich is a political genius.

Newt needs to be assigned to the TRUMP “kitchen cabinet”, for counsel and opinion at the ready. There is not much left out there that Newt hasn’t already seen, or certainly already calculated as to the possibilities and outcomes.

Besides, this will keep them talking and speculating, and covering him right up to the convention. More free publicity. Man is NOT a fool.

Not to mention his choice of VP is important and he will take is very seriously without regard to gender/ethnicity/religion/race, blah blah blah. I believe he will choose the person he thinks would best fill the POTUS role should anything happen to him.

Webb brings nothing needed.

Jeff Sessions is superior in every way. IMHO, Saxxon. :)

Interesting...... Jim Webb has been trying to turn the Democrat party away from it’s socialist tilt for quite a while now. Jim is a West Va. Hillbilly, former highly decorated Marine , and Sec of the Navy under Reagan....Don’t let the Democrat tag fool ya, old southern style conservative with a protective bent for the veterans. Not saying yea, but interesting.....

In many ways Trump defies labels. His sole interest is America. Who can help him right the Ship of State will get the call. Those that love labels will be disappointed, America will not be.

I suppose you are right about his intelligence, but I'd rather not see or hear him. And I doubt he'd like to stay in the background.

Ted Cruz is intelligent, too, but Trump should not trust him for anything. Paybacks are a b!tch, and he didn't go quietly into the night. Sean did give him due credit today for taking some hard stands that cost him personally.

But both are now high on my unlikeble meter plus Newt is a carryover from an unpopular administration. I wasn't paying too much attention in those years to the machinations in Washington, just Desert Storm, and see that he was forced to resign as Speaker of the House, then he resigned from the House altogether.

Agree Sessions is superior.

That has nothing to do with how Trump will pick.

He’s taking a Democrat.
