Tow truck driver said he refused service to woman because she supports Bernie Sanders

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A local tow truck driver said he refused to tow a woman’s car after he saw Bernie Sanders stickers on the vehicle.

Kenneth Shupe said he was called to pick up a woman stranded on I-26 in Asheville on Monday.

When he saw “a bunch of Bernie Sanders stuff” he said he told the woman, “very politely,” that he could’t tow her car because she was “obviously a socialist” and advised her to “call the government” for a tow.

"Every business dealing in recent history with a socialist minded person I have not gotten paid," Shupe said. "Every time I deal with these people I get 'Berned' with an 'e' not a 'u'."

Shupe, who runs Shupee Max Towing in Travelers Rest, said he is a conservative Christian who supports Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Shupe said he has drawn a line in the sand not to do business with Bernie Sanders’ supporters.

Sanders is running for president in 2016 on the Democratic ticket.

“I respect their beliefs, and I hope they respect my views,” Shupe said Wednesday.

The woman’s mother Kelle McWade posted an angry message on Facebook after the incident, calling Shupe a bigot.

"Trump's motto is 'Make America Great Again'," McWade said. "And this kind of divisive behavior is not going to make America great again."

Below is Kelle McWade’s public post:

Heads up, friends.... Cass had a wreck in Asheville yesterday. She is fine, but the car was not driveable. We called our mechanic who was tied up in Easley at the time, so he sent ShupeeMax Towing to get her. Kenneth Shupee drove from Travelers Rest to Asheville, hooked up her car, and when he went around to the back, he came back and told her that he wouldn't tow her because she had a Bernie sticker on the back of the car. HE LEFT HER ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE IN NC, and DROVE AWAY. Spread this bigot's story far & wide. Btw, I'm guessing he's a Trump supporter. The only difference is that the Don would have taken the money, because he at least realizes that liberals' money spends just the same as anyone else's. Dumb (expletive) cost himself money driving all the way to Asheville & back for nothing. (Expletive).

Greenville Attorney Steve Sumner weighed in on the situation saying,"We may not like it and we may not agree with it but I don't believe any laws were broken."

Sumner said unlike race, sexuality, and religion, political affiliation is not a protected class.

"As long as there is no contract between the driver and the tow truck company then there is no legal obligation for the tow truck company to pick her up," Sumner said.

Does this mean all judgment is good?

I doubt this fellow represented Christ well at all. He should have just shut up about his faith rather than make a negative witness, and I stand on the bible for that.

And yes before God he will hurt himself. Again the bible says so.

Oh, and anyone who says animals don’t judge has never owned cats, or been owned by them.

Legit concern, a socialist like her might have stuck him for the bill.

You mean kudos for being a judgmental ass, and I wonder about the kudoser too. No matter. He penalized himself.

Perhaps you missed the part about his having a history of Bernie supporters not paying their bill? Or are you requiring that businesses accept being unpaid for service rendered?

So long as they pay their bills on time, I'm just happy to have their business.

Think of the 9-11 hijackers and their flight lessons.

I am NOT comparing your situation to that extreme example.

But I think it does show that there are lines that have to be drawn.

I have made it a point in recent years not to patronize businesses that I know are passionately supportive of leftist causes.

I take the business of and do business with many with whom I disagree...but if the obvious intention of their political bent is to stop ranchers, farmers, coal miners, oil men, outfitters and so on---these are my customer base---then I try to avoid them if at all possible.

The thread was about POLITICAL AFFILIATIONS, not religion. Based on your obvious inability to stay on point, there’s no point in a continuing debate on this thread.

Have a nice day.

Aw, you’re being sensible.

Thanks. This thread is actually making my head hurt. I think I'm going to have to stop following it.

Conferences routinely dis-invite speakers when - gasp - they find that the speaker has conservative views. Then folks here (rightly) denounce the conference for being mindlessly PC.

Then we have this tow truck driver executing his own version of political correctness. And he's applauded.

I suppose some will say turnabout is fair play. I would disagree with that, even when putting the moral issues aside. Either being PC is right, or being PC is wrong.

I would just ask for cash up front or a credit card and take a pic of her handing me the credit card to and her vehicle with the tag displaying to prove That she requested my service. If she paid I'd tow her. If she said she couldn't or wanted to give me a personal or post-dated check I'd refuse and my reasoning for refusing service wouldn't meet the permanent victim requirements of the socialist beehive mind for them to lie and paint me as a target.

You have to watch the socialists and their klepto tendencies especially their chargeback schemes on their credit cards. A tailor / fashion designer friend of mine told me that 4 guys who were later all determined to be tied together and are Millenial socialist entrepreneurs ordered special made tailored suits with specific designs to attend a big event together. All of them stated the suits were not to their liking and demanded a refund. When he wouldnt because he found Facebook posts with pics of them where they fit perfectly and likes and comments about how good their suits looked with them acknowledging it and the time and effort he took to make them, they claimed the "product was defective" and said they were returning them and did chargebacks on all the credit cards. And yes they would all vote for Bernie or Hillary because they are dimocrats. And while I agree with the tow truck driver's premise I wouldn't have painted myself a target with the completely unreasonable, spoiled, self-entitled, ungodly, horrible twits.

Your points are valid and well taken. However gays who walk in a bakery sue for discrimination for refusal of service with different outcomes depending on the judge's mood or whatever state.. Why not sue a tow truck driver for denial of service? Even if he had somehow known her politics when the call came in and refused her service, he could still conceivably be sued for discrimination.

I put myself in that woman's place and would have been extremely upset, angry but overcome with stress of getting myself out of a potentially dangerous situation, not just traffic but trusting anyone who comes to help.

I've been in her shoes, and I shudder to think someone wouldn't help me because of my political views (if they were obvious). Often I've had to put trust in strangers that I would worry about my family trusting strangers like I have.

Again, the driver stated that he has been stiffed for the bill very frequently by people who proclaim their affiliation to Bernie. Are you trying to state that a businessman must render service for which he will not be paid?

But that is his averred basis for turning down the business - people who proclaim Bernie affiliation have stiffed his business for the bill, and done so frequently.

What happens when she disputes the charges?

Cash or no tow.

Priceless.

I shudder to think that the government would punish me for my political views, oh wait, the IRS is already doing that.

“What he did may be grounds for a discrimination lawsuit.”

Attorney already said that political affiliation is not a protected class.
