A criminal complaint filed in federal court Wednesday offers new details about the kidnapping and killing of 11-year-old Ashlynne Mike.
Authorities were led to Tom Begaye, 27, by a tip from one of his neighbors, according to the indictment.
Begaye told authorities he was looking for a child to have sex with Monday afternoon and picked up Ashlynne and Ian Mike, who were playing in a ditch near their home.
Ashlynne had injured her foot and agreed to get in Begayes car to get a ride.
He took her to a desolate dirt road near the Ship Rock pinnacle, where authorities say he raped her and beat her with a tire iron. He then let her younger brother Ian Mike go, according to the complaint.
Begaye was charged with murder and kidnapping and faces a minimum of 20 years in prison.
In a hearing at the Farmington Municipal Courthouse Wednesday morning, a federal prosecutor requested that Begaye should remain in jail until a hearing on Friday, and U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Briones agreed.

The crime occurred on Navajo tribal land and jurisdiction of major crimes is with the Feds who have the death penalty. If the Wikipedia citations are correct, there are ample offenses Begaye could be charged with that could incur the death penalty.

No.
Not even close.
God says otherwise unless you don’t believe in the Bible.
Twenty years for kidnapping, rape, and murder?????
That’s a disgrace. Infamita.
Stuff it. If you feel you're equal to this bastard, then kill yourself, because you don't deserve to live. Christianity does NOT equate everyone with child rapist murderers and the utter destruction of moral discrimination and the complete loss of the Western criminal Justice system. You want to fantasize about Jesus being a social justice warrior, take it to DU. But stop slandering the memory of this butchered little girl and the civilization which would protect her. And don't bother wasting your time reading the Bible - you need a logic class.
You upset a bit?
And you don’t believe in the Bible? Or what Jesus said.
You’ll regret that train of thought one day soon. Trust me!
God says otherwise unless you dont believe in the Bible.

You’ll have to help me with a citation on this, that, say, wearing mixed fabrics is somehow equivalent to rape and murder in God’s eyes.
Justice--- whatever it is--- should be swift, severe and certain.
Twenty years for raping an 11 year old child and killing her with a tire iron?
To believe such a thing is to render oneself a moral idiot.
Some folks seem to forget that one little bitty sin is actually a huge sin in God’s eyes.
You think about killing somebody, just think it, means you’re a murderer.
Matthew 5:21-22

My point was that every sin no matter how small is deserving of condemnation. Romans 6:23 refers to this and since all sins (without a remedy) are against an Eternal God first, they must have eternal consequences. All sins might not necessarily be equal in severity, but they are in penalty.
The Apostle Paul called himself “Chief of Sinners”.
Moral idiots have a whole lot more personal responsibility & honesty when it comes to addressing that dreaded Face-to-Face meeting with God we’ll all have one day.
Good luck to you!
Let the Navajo reap justice for their child. I’m sure they’ll do much better than a minimum 20 year prison sentence.
Happened on Navajo land, so it's federal jurisdiction (because of the nature of the crimes - we have two counts of kidnapping, one count of rape, and one count of murder), and there is the death penalty at the federal level. New Mexico no longer has the death penalty.
The dirtbag doesn't have the necessary blackened eyes and abrasions from bouncing off the pavement like should be there after 'resisting arrest' as he obviously would've done.
AND he's looking defiant.
Huh.
Yup, must be a file pic.
That's the minimum. Death penalty is on the table as it is federal.
I don't believe in YOUR interpretation of the Bible, hell no.
And upset? Yes, a lot. This story is one of the most upsetting things I've ever read. But what makes it worse is your moral equivalency that would undermine any chance of stopping such atrocities. And what makes it perverse is your hiding behind Jesus and the Bible. To you, the soldiers who risked their lives liberating Auschwitz were as bad as the Nazis who ran the camp. The cops who arrested this butcher are as bad as he is. You'd teach Jesus in a way that would destroy any morality in stopping maniacs around the whole world.
Jesus? You know nothing about Jesus. You're a coward who hides behind those willing to take on the moral burden necessary to keep your sorry @ss safe from harm - and then you curse those who save you. You're the end of the world.
Pissed? You bet I am.
Check out my FR name and ask yourself WWGHD?
This Date in Native History: On September 4, 1886, the great Apache warrior Geronimo surrendered in Skeleton Canyon, Arizona, after fighting for his homeland for almost 30 years. He was the last American Indian warrior to formally surrender to the United States
It also looks like they’ve got him in a protective vest (the black ballistic looking material at the photo edges). So my guess was this is his arrest photo and the police know a lotta folks will want quick justice over a slow fire. Can’t blame them.
Youve not demonstrated with your Matthew citation that thinking about murder makes one a murderer.
A sinner, sure, murderer, not seeing it.
Note that God does not call for the death of those wearing mixed fabrics, but does for other sins.
