When 11-year-old Ashlynne Mike and her 9-year-old brother stepped into a stranger’s van after being dropped off by a school bus Monday, they likely believed they were heading to see a movie.
The stranger, it seems, had a more sinister plan.
According to authorities, he abducted the children, and in a crime that shocked the entire Navajo Nation and surrounding communities, killed Ashlynne, leaving her body along a desolate dirt road that cuts through the desert near the towering rock monument that overlooks the town of Shiprock.
Late Tuesday, the FBI arrested 27-year-old Tom Begaye, of Waterflow, N.M., in connection with Ashlynne’s abduction and death — putting an end to a massive manhunt and easing fears that rippled through the community regarding all children’s safety.
FBI spokesman Frank Fisher wouldn’t say why authorities believe Begaye is connected to the crime. He has a court hearing scheduled for today.
Cheers erupted among hundreds at a vigil being held Tuesday evening for Ashlynne when word of his arrest was announced.
Meanwhile, at least one child, a friend of Ashlynne’s brother Ian Mike, avoided being abducted by the suspect.
That boy’s father, Shawn Mike, said his son was asked to join the children in the stranger’s van Monday afternoon but declined. The boy said he saw Ashlynne inside the van smiling as she waved goodbye.
“You would not believe how thankful I am,” Shawn Mike said Tuesday holding back tears. “Thank God that he had the wisdom to just say no. I held him so close last night."
New Mexico State Police issued an Amber Alert on behalf of the FBI for Ashlynne Mike, 11, who was last seen in San Juan County around 4:00 p.m on Monday.

Ya know, “The Blood Eagle” is a punishment that needs reviving.

I keep reading that and I’m still confused. He picked up two children. He killed the girl. What happened to her 9 year old brother?
Okay, went to the source. He let the boy go before he took the girl to ship rock and killed her. The boy was found by police.
Wow, prayers for that family. Deeper into the abyss we go.. I remember riding bikes five or ten miles with no fear.. Crimes like that only happened in Nyc and Chicago those days.

The brother’s friend did have the same last name as the victim and her brother.
According to some of the comments at the news site the Amber Alert was delayed because the authorities needed permission from the Navaho nation to issue it and the Navaho haven’t any protocol for doing so. All that time lost!
At 2 am that just causes millions to opt out of getting future Amber alerts. Cellphone software could be improved to ignore these alerts during sleeping hours when the phone is at home and isn't in motion. Also, it should be possible to opt out of the Obama alerts if people want to. This is still America.

You can tell by the last name that the perp is also a native.
The article mentioned that he is Navajo. I am not familiar with law concerning tribal crime. Do the tribes have their own courts? If this happened on the reservation, who has jurisdiction?
I read articles like this one too frequently these days. My brain and soul want to scream.....

Common Navajo name. Some around the Waterflow were believed to be skinwalkers.
Wonder if he will morph into a wolf or coyote to try and escape.

Yep. It was about 2:15am. Woke me up. I think the Amber Alert system is a good thing, but it needs some refining. I’m in the southwest part of the state, an this was taking place up north, many hours away. I was actually kind of mad when I reached over to my phone as it screamed out with that nuclear meltdown sounding alarm.
