When plans leaked out, though, there was no celebration, only furious opposition that culminated in residents packing the fire hall to complain the roads couldn't handle the truck traffic, the stench from the plant would be unbearable and immigrants and out-of-towners would flood the area, overwhelming schools and changing the town's character.

Not just illegals. Plants like this usually bring in Somali refugees and other Muslim refugees. Who wants all these unsavory Muslims in your small town?

I’ve read about Lewiston, Maine. Not really an American city anymore.
Good on the town council! In the 1990s, a huge beef processing plant, employing 1,500, opened in Brooks, AB, an oil town of 9,500 people. The company, XL Foods, wanted town council to push for development of apartments, so immigrants could live in town and work at the plant. No dice. Instead, XL Foods had to bus in workers (mostly Somali and Filipino) from Medicine Hat, a city of 44,000, 70 miles away.
Eventually, Town Council gave in and zoned for apartment buildings for the packing plant employees. Now the plant has 2,000 employees, Brooks has grown to 15,000 (about 1,400 Somalis) and Medicine Hat is now 60,000. Brooks is a little less ‘oil patch rough’ than 25 years ago, but has a higher crime rate, along with a mosque, not that Somali muslims have ANYTHING to do with crime anywhere!
We are going to run out of places to relocate to. It’s a shame.
