Ted Cruz: Donald Trump could "encourage riots" in Cleveland if he doesn't win
CBS News ^ | May 1, 2016 | Emily Schultheis

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said in an interview airing Sunday that GOP front-runner Donald Trump may encourage riots if he does not win the Republican nomination in Cleveland this summer.

Asked on CBS' "Face the Nation" if he was concerned about the possibility of violence if he were able to "overthrow" Trump with the delegates in Cleveland, Cruz insisted there wouldn't but said that Trump might try to fan the flames.

"No, it won't, although Donald may do everything he can to encourage riots," he said. "You know, overthrow is such a loaded spin word as ... to bring nothing but chuckles."

Gerald Ford and Abraham Lincoln both won their respective nominations despite coming in with fewer votes than their opponents, he added, so it wouldn't be the first time that the candidate who comes out of a convention is the one who didn't win the most votes during the primaries.

"When we arrive in Cleveland, I'm going have a bunch of delegates," he said. "Donald's going have a bunch of delegates. And it's going be a battle to see who can earn the support of a majority of the delegates elected by the people."

Ford was 43 delegates ahead (1,121 to Reagan's 1,078). In that year, 1,130 was the required amount so Ford was just 9 delegates short. Reagan only needed 58 delegates to put him over the top. So realistically, Reagan had a case for forcing a second ballot but it was a long shot as Ford only needed nine - which he ended up securing.

True, and it was Paul Manafort who successfully ran Ford's 1976 convention delegate battle. Manafort did such an impressive job that Reagan hired him four years later, and Manafort secured the delegates for Reagan at the 1980 convention.

When it comes to securing delegates needed, Trump has the best guy in the business in Paul Manafort.

I hope Trump has a whole team, maybe a whole floor of Jewish Lawyers From New York working on the case he’s going to present against the dear Senator, “Mister” Cruz, esq.

This is part of an ongoing campaign in the media to associate Trump with violence. They almost always fail to mention that the violence is perpetrated against Trump, not by him

You're absolutely right, which is why Trump has taken to repeating, at many rallies and in media interviews: "The safest place in the world is at a Trump rally."

Trump knows branding, and he knew he had to get a counter-narrative going.

I like it.

Best way to complain about (and screw) a co-worker is to go to the boss and say I’m “conceeeeerned...” about so-and-so. They don’t seem to be themselves lately... frequent outbursts of temper... wild accusations.... not good... co-workers are worried...

Well, if trump can shoot people on 5th avenue and strumpets will follow him, why are you surprised at this?

it should be a point strumpets embrace

how about he pays you to punch protesters in the face?

Cruz’s top surrogate Beck can rub his face in a bowl of cheetos and Cruzies will still follow him, why are you surprised?

Cruz and Beck’s hysterical behavior is embraced by Cruz cult followers.

How about he pays you to drink a final glass of Kruz-Aid since time is running out in Cruztown?

Not that lie AGAIN. There were no primaries and votes when Lincoln won the nomination. Why do people let Cruz get away with statements like this?

And Gerald Ford won more votes during the primaries than Reagan and secured the nomination. What exactly is Cruz even talking about?

There’s just nothing to be gained by courting the hysterically insane never Trumpers. They need to be escorted from the building and their political lands salted. They are working hand in hand with Democrats to defeat Trump and they must be politically destroyed ASAP.

I agree they're not worth courting. For one nanosecond. But I wouldn't waste an ounce of energy on their political destruction. 1) They are destroying themselves. 2) There aren't that many of them. About 70 percent of conservative media and "intelligentsia" – which is about 100 people – and about 4 percent of voters.

They are about to snake away like the black-shadow demons in the movie "Ghost" draining into the sewers.

Somewhere along the line Cruz recalled the old cliche that negative campaigning works. But he forgot what Trump said after Rubio self-destructed: Some people can "do hostile" and some can't. Cruz is lousy at it and is self destructing just as Rubio did..

When Ted Cruz says, “the People” he means “the People That Matter”

see?
Once again, what TRUMP says is immaterial, but what someone who ISNT TED says is more important

thats the way democrats argue to defend hillary, 1>17
1 aacusation you think you have against Ted is worse than the 17 facts we know are bad about trump

Biblical level of delusion.

I’m guessing there are a helluva lot of people in this country, and more every day, that wished they had cast their vote for the Don

And even MORE people – including me – who wish we could get the $$$$$$$ back we donated to Ted Cruz.
