Beer Becomes the Latest Scarcity in a Venezuela Crippled by Shortages
Wall Street Journal ^ | April 29, 2016 | JUAN FORERO and MAYELA ARMAS

CARACAS, Venezuela—The largest private Venezuelan company and producer of 80% of the beer consumed here began to shut down its last beer plant on Friday, the latest deprivation in a country crippled by shortages.

Sean Penn, Danny Glover and other celebrity Chavistas should hustle to Venezuela, roll up their sleeves, and fix all the country’s problems. Surely as tight as the were with Hugo, they have the inside scoop on running a socialist paradise? Why not show up now when they are really needed, stand-ins for their dearly departed buddy? Surely the people love them...right???

When a nation rich in oil reserves runs out of beer you know things are completely out of whack.

By the way, you don’t use a still to make beer.

I’m thinking that, under the circumstances, that they’d want something stronger.

I think this has been an issue for a month or more.

It'll be good to drive some self-sufficiency into the peeps.

Well in Venezuela, you would have no refrigeration even if you were able to brew your own beer.

There are probably people who were proactive enough to buy the parts for stills. They will be fine. The rest, not so much.

Except that there are shortages in all of the ingredients necessary to make beer (barley, hops, yeast and clean water), if you already acquired all of the components necessary to make a still. Plus the currency has no value with which to import anything from somewhere else.

Basically, Venezuela is quickly reaching the socialist ideal of equality for all. Equally miserable.

Venezuela is a textbook example of the abject failure of socialism.

But this time socialism will work!
