For the first time in the Western Hemisphere, researchers have detected the Zika virus in Aedes albopictus, the mosquito species known as the “Asian tiger,” a finding that increases the number of U.S. states potentially at risk for transmission of the disease.
During the summer months when U.S. mosquito populations are at their peak, albopictus are more ubiquitous than the Aedes aegypti that have been the primary vector of the spread of Zika elsewhere in the Americas. Unlike the aegypti mosquito, which is mostly present in southern United States and along the Gulf Coast, the albopictus has a range as far north as New England and the lower Great Lakes.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

I used to run behind that kind of truck while living on the Animas River in Farmington NM back in 1956! Maybe that is why I am this way today!
Then we also used to spray ourselves down with DDT bug killer back in 1969 SE Asia to keep the mosquitos away.

There is no real link to prove the Zika virus and microcephaly. There was only Zika virus found in 17 cases in Brazil which is likely in the normal range there and doesn’t prove causality.
I don’t get why everyone always eats this stuff up so readily. Fake disease - induce fear and billions of dollars change hands. I get the news and TV shows including this stuff and the idea that world health organizations and all these government NGO lobbying groups and politicians are beyond reproach as benevolent caring do gooders always looking out to aid the needy minorities and masses in general.
Then why the hell didn't they just leave it undiscovered? Fools!
Some scientists are genetically modifying a male mosquito that makes the Aedes aegypti females unable to produce viable larvae — the larva hatch too early, killing the species off.
We live in interesting times. We can introduce a population of mosquito that will exterminate itself — no chemical warfare. A simple abatement procedure, releasing males that reduce the local population group by 80%.
Yup. And the GMO-freakazoids and hell bent on fighting it, even though it works. FDA has approved some small testing but the usual footdragging continues. I’d rather have a targeted solution than a chem spray that kills everything.
I contracted Zika in 90’s Mexico. I went to the doctor to find out what the crazy weird rash I had was and he was able to tell me immediately. As I was not young or aged it was largely considered benign if the rash didn’t get out of control. It was even thought to be beneficial since it gave me immunity to Yellow and Dengue fevers which are much more lethal!
Has it become radically more lethal in the decades since then? Is it just the possibility of birth defects that is freaking people out even if they aren’t pregnant women? What elevated this to Fear Factor Five?
First thing I thought of.
