A 16-year-old boy will appear in a Sydney court later today charged with planning a terrorist attack at a Sydney Anzac Day event. Counter terrorism police arrested the teenager in his home in Auburn, in Sydney’s west, yesterday afternoon. NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said the age of the suspect was concerning. “Now, the age of the individual is of significant concern. Sixteen years of age. A boy,” NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione told reporters this morning. Mr Scipione said the boy had been charged with one count of acts in preparation or planning a terrorist act. The offence carries a maximum penalty of life in jail. “Police will be alleging it was linked to the Anzac commemorations today,” he said. The arrest was the result of an investigation by Operation Vianden officers. Police believe the boy was acting alone and the threat had been “thwarted”. It appeared he had been radicalised online, Mr Scipione said. He was known to security services. Officers had been monitoring the boy’s online activities and were forced to act yesterday. The 16-year-old was arrested alone on a street near his Auburn home.
“We had to do that to ensure the safety of the community. Clearly we have taken that action with community safety on the eve of the sacred day, which is Anzac Day. I want to assure the community here in NSW that our counter-terrorism capability is such that we are able to move very quickly to prevent harm and on this occasion we have done that,” Mr Scipione said.

(The Australian and New Zealand colonies had sent troops overseas before as part of British Imperial forces, but had only become nations in their own right in 1901 and 1907 respectively - and while both had conducted small scale operations in the Pacific area during 1914 (capturing German dependencies), Gallipoli was the first large scale operation they were part of - and it's seen as the day we were baptised in blood).
Around Australia and New Zealand - and on battlefields overseas - the day is marked with many commemorative services, all of which would be rich targets for terrorism in the modern world, both symbolically, and because of the large number of people present.
Glad they were able to intercept and stop the planned attack.

I used to work with a guy who raised sheep in New Zealand for several years. When we spoke about the area, I possibly made the mistake of speaking of Australia and New Zealand as sort of one thing.
He informed me that they were a thousand miles apart. I of course knew they were separate countries.
I am not so sure I was wrong tho. Looking on a globe they are relatively close.

The age is not as much of a significant concern as is Islam.
When the muzzies manage to touch one off in one in an advanced countries, we will find and take care if every liberal who defended that wretched cult.

Australia and New Zealand are very similar in a lot of ways, and have very close relationships. And New Zealand actually came very close to being part of Australia - Australia’s constitution actually includes provisions for New Zealand to join.
They are our brothers. But yes, not, the same thing.
Not one use of the words “Muslim” or “Islam” in the article, even though the religion of the 16 yr old is obvious to all - apparently Australian media are as determined to whitewash Islam as the US media.
Remembrance Day (11th November) is also commemorated but on a somewhat lower level - it is seen as the day to remember the dead from all nations in all wars - rather than being specifically focused on Australia and New Zealand as ANZAC Day is. ANZAC Day is a public holiday and also includes parades where veterans march in all major cities and towns (and many smaller ones as well). Remembrance Day is not a public holiday, but most people (and most school and workplaces) pause for the minute’s silence at the eleventh hour and there are commemorations at the major war memorials.
Actually, it’s been a problem for some time. Too many liberal loons continue to think if they just “accept” the islamist infiltrators that somehow everything will eventually work out in a civil manner and they’ll turn out to be proper ‘strines if we just “care enough” and “don’t judge them”.
Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Italy, France, Greece and the U.K. made the same mistake, just to name a small lot of similarly-intentioned places.
And are STILL making it.
Not really - the media will not publish the religion until that information is officially released by the police but once it is, most media outlets will mention it. Not all.
As a basic principle, though, the media does not publish information relating to an ongoing criminal investigation until the police announce it, and the police have only made a very bare bones announcement so far. That’s normal - it generally takes at least a day for a proper press conference (and today may take a little longer because of the ANZAC Day commemorations and it being a public holiday).
Thanks for the info. I personally felt most strongly about Remembrance Day over the years and always tried to find a place to take that few moment’s pause to reflect upon brothers lost.
I suppose being ex-military it simply came to mean a great deal more as I made the acquaintance of many other people who revered the day at least as much as I have.
