Georgetown and the Sin of Slavery (Hurl)
NY Times ^ | 04-23-2016 | THE EDITORIAL BOARD

The reparations movement, which calls for compensating the descendants of generations of enslaved Americans going back 250 years, has failed to gain traction in this country for a variety of reasons.

Most Americans see slavery as an artifact of the distant past that has no bearing on the nation’s present. And even people who are sympathetic to the reparations idea — and who acknowledge the continued imprint of slavery on society — have often argued that there is no way to distinguish descendants who have provable claims to compensation from those who do not, partly because enslaved people usually went unnamed in the United States census, which rendered them faceless in the historical record.

Bankers, merchants and manufacturers all profited from the slave trade, as did companies that insured slaving ships and their cargo. And more than a dozen universities have acknowledged ties to slavery. Even so, some will find ways to paper over the role that slavery played in their founding and early history.

Such denials are impossible in the harrowing history of slavery at Georgetown University that Rachel Swarns recounted recently in The Times. In 1838, the Jesuits running the college that became Georgetown sold 272 African-American men, women and children into a hellish life on sugar plantations in the South to finance the college’s continued operation. On that fact, there is no dispute.

Their middle east and Asian pals still practice slavery. Where’s their slavery outrage now?

We had a war - We gave slaves 40 acres and a mule.

THEY HAD REPARATIONS.

To say otherwise is a lie.

Georgetown is morally obligated to adopt restorative measures, which should clearly include a scholarship fund for the descendants of those who were sold to save the institution.

Anyone else get disturbed, when liberals such as the NY Times, who on many other issues eschew any sort of morality or moral standards, suddenly want to lecture us what the “moral” thing to do is on an issue????

Is there anyone who can truthfully say they lost having one meal, one nights sleep over the fact of black chattel slavery and post civil war segregation?

My father’s side of the family emigrated from Germany in 1846 and settled in Indiana. They got here just in time to fight in the civil war.So I don’t want to hear any reparations talk,we already paid the price in blood.

The only thing Georgetown is “morally obligated” to do is stop supporting slavery.

It doesn’t support it and hasn’t for over one hundred years.

Case closed.

Muslims in the Middle East still buy and sell slaves. Have been doing it forever. Middle Easterners should pay any reparations.

However, I would support a repatriation fund that would buy one-way tickets. And no coming back to the U.S. allowed.

This manic white guilt obsession with blacks, the history of slavery, black reparations and Affirmative Action is killing the spirit of whites and blacks and has dragged the country into a swamp of self hate and self pity.

White liberals treat blacks like helpless yard pets that can’t do much more than eat the food liberals put out in the backyard for them.

If we don’t get some sane, adult leadership soon this abnormal obsession over blacks will finish destroying American blacks as functioning human beings and will end up destroying the country.

Its rather muted as being too noisy about it would upset the liberal mastahs on the plantation. The mastahs like the slavers in the middle east and Asia.

No. The vast majority received nothing except their freedom. Most all war time orders on this were rescinded, and only a few were able to keep the land given to them by the Union Army after the war.

Will my Irish ancestors be in the list of those whose decendants are eligible? The Irish were enslaved in America longer than the Africans. We were also enslaved in Europe before that.

Ok - then we should see that they get paid appropriately.

Oh... They’re not alive anymore...

Look we fought a war, we’ve upended the country with affirmative action laws, we’ve given them housing and food and lowered entry standards and its STILL never enough.

I say it is.

Why no "reparations"? Here's one big reason:

Because after DECADES of "Affirmative action", "minority set-asides", welfare, etc, etc, it hasn't been enough.

No amount of reparations will be enough

Nothing we do will ever make them happy

So why bother, then?

Seven hundred thousand white boys died on the altar of the Civil War over the issue of slavery. That is ONE for every FIVE slaves freed.

Add in those who gave arms, legs, lives. families destroyed and it would equal out one for one.

We owe NOTHING to the descendents of slaves. Reparations have been paid in blood.

Until 1775 every nation on Earth practiced slavery in one form or another. Even today slavery exists openly in many nations and clandestinely in most others. Even here in the USA among the islamic, Hispanic and pimp communities it goes on.
