Trump: I would change GOP platform on abortion
CNN ^ | 04/21/16 | David Wright

Posted on 04/21/2016 10:32:44 AM PDT by writer33

Donald Trump said Thursday he would change the Republican Party platform's position on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Trump made the remarks during a town hall on the "Today" show on NBC on Thursday morning when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about abortion exceptions.

"The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed," Guthrie said. "And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?"

"Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely," Trump said. "For the three exceptions, I would."

Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: "We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

Trump has repeatedly said he was for exceptions and then tells you Ronald Reagan had the same exceptions, which he did when he first ran, but during his second term was 100% pro-life with no exceptions.

Exactly

The republicans enable abortion. What would they put in its place?

There will be exactly zero sitting republicans who are not pimping for Cruz will make a strong case against trump on this

Anyone pretending republicans are against abortion is dreaming

The fact is they have made it such a precious issue by enabling it for forty years no one will touch it not even trump

Of course killing a baby just for being a profuct of rape is evil

Republicans are fixing this? If trump doesn’t get in the White House?

No

The bottom line is the president doesn’t have much say so when it comes to bathrooms or abortion. The best pro life work since Roe has come at the local level. I didn’t expect Trump’s positions to line up perfectly with mine. He’s still the best choice by far.

He’s a bit better then Reagan on this issue. Reagan made abortion legal in California resulting in the legalization of abortion throughout the United States.

But he’s true conservative, Reagan 2.0 according to several Freepers, how can this be?
DUH, it’s because he’s a liberal Democrat!!!!!!!

You've got it all wrong. The rest of us just don't understand what conservatism is. Adjusting positions to match Trump is 5, 4, 3, 2, .....

>> Haven’t you gotten the directive from the site masters?

I have seen those directives, yes. And their many photoshopped derivatives.

However my soul has somehow remained impervious to the “drink the koolaid” reasoning. It’s those pesky “Christian principles” I’m saddled with, I’m afraid. :-)

Also, just a scant four "severely conservative" years ago:

"Romney previously supported a woman’s right to decide, but he is now adamantly opposed to abortions, unless it involves cases of rape, incest or if the mother’s life is in mortal danger."

Note how many of the anxious #NeverTrump pearl clutchers were noisily, desperately championing a guy with the exact same position as "a truly conservative candidate," last time out.

Funny, that.

"... for rape, incest and the life of the mother."

How in the world does this justify murdering an unborn, innocent person?

It doesn't. But it's an exception than even many pro-lifers feel is necessary. Especially "life of the mother". Are you going to condemn a woman to death if her pregnancy carries extreme risk?

It's stridence such as yours that probably drives so many away from the pro-life position...

Regarding my 73, I will not gloat or deride Trump further on this topic. I recognize that there are many long-time Freepers that I have enjoyed interacting with over the past 15+ years. They must have known this was part of the deal when they climbed aboard the Trump Train.

I fear it's just begun, that we'll see more utterances from Mr. Trump that will make him more unpalatable to the unwashed.

I’m saddled with the same. somehow just because others/the sitemaster see Trump differently, I cannot convince myself that they know better or are in any way better informed than I.

I realize that I’m in the minority here. But those are my exceptions too. With the caveat that it is done in the first week

I liked his original statement of throwing woman in jail who have illegal abortions if illegal. But you guys thought that was to strict. Basically you are never happy just like liberals. Always in perpetual outrage.

Well let’s see. We have Hillary and Bernie who are for abortion on demand at any time up to deliver. Trump is for abortion for incest and rape, which I assume would be within hours or days using the morning after pill, which is legal. We’re not talking abortion weeks after the fact.

Regarding, abortion at risk of the mother, assuming physical risk, not mental risk, is a medical matter between the doctor and the patient, as opposed to it being decided by the mother.

Here we go again, inserting this controversy where there is no controversy.

The discussion will be one side in hysteria and the other side’s arguments not being taken into consideration.

Unfortunately social conservatives are hell bent on self-marginalization no matter how many people tell them that’s exactly how to get absolutely nothing that they want and to not even be invited to the table in future policy discussions.

“The republicans have done nothing to stop abortion but talk”

To the contrary, perhaps you haven’t paid much attention to the numerous pro-life legislative victories led by state GOP governors and GOP state legislatures. For example, the pro-life bill passed in Texas a couple of years ago placed such onerous burdens on abortion providers that all but a handful have closed up shop. Numerous other states have followed suit with similar bills.

That’s far more than just “talk”

If all life is valued are against the death penalty?

Does that also mean that if use my firearm to defend my life that I'm guilty of murder?
