Trump: I would change GOP platform on abortion
CNN ^ | 04/21/16 | David Wright

Donald Trump said Thursday he would change the Republican Party platform's position on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Trump made the remarks during a town hall on the "Today" show on NBC on Thursday morning when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about abortion exceptions.

"The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed," Guthrie said. "And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?"

"Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely," Trump said. "For the three exceptions, I would."

Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: "We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

Now, if Kasich had said this, or made the the transgender bathroom comment attributed to Trump, he’s be belittled as a RINO.

If we’re going to get a RINO, why not vote for one who can actually win something in Nov?

Yes, he regretted it way before he ran for president and he never went back to his former opinion, unlike Trump who has no idea why Planned Parenthood is a vile corporation.

And was it the Democrats or Republicans that just gave funding to Planned Parenthood in December?

Life begins at conception. Settled issue. No discussion need be had. Just pick up an embryology book.

Well, Jim Robinson, your host put that all to rest. Go look up his post.

Trump is a GOP conservative. Cruz is a RINO conservative.

See the difference? Perhaps you’re a RINO conservative too?

I’m surprised Trump is appearing to change positions before the convention. I expected him to go center after he won the nomination but if he starts changing views on many issues it will look more and more like a plot to destroy the republican party. He hasn’t won the nomination yet and things can change quickly...

-----

The Republican base is more pro abortion than any of us want to admit. Clearly, more favor exceptions for abortion in cases of rape incest, life of mom than the die hards who are ignored anyway once the nomination is secured.

Look, the platform issue is what they give die hards as a dace saving bone. It is what you do for one issue voter blocks that you want to keep in the fold but ignore when in power.

We all know that right?

Not quite yet.

But soon! Very soon.

Yeah yeah - it's the run to for you Trump peeps to try to re-define Reagan to make Trump look Conservative.

Had Reagan vetoed the 1967 bill, which he wanted to, he would have been overridden by the CA Legislature so he signed it with the hope of watering it down. Admitting he made a terrible mistake and not really having a strong opinion on abortion as it was not the hot button topic as it is today, he immediately took up the mantle of life and promoted it for the rest of his days.

There are the facts and then there are the facts Trump supporters want to know so their liberal candidate looks less so.

The constitutional framework assumes the federal government would support states that wish to use the police power against murderers. Seeking a federal assertion of a right to life for the unborn is a legitimate objective in our federalism. But short of that, surely as one who honors the 10th you understand that it is the fed who began interfering and continues now to interfere with many many states seeking to stop the murder of the unborn. But for a man’s popular candidacy, this would not even be controversial on FR. Pro-murder didn’t used to work here. I guess times have changed.

Peace,

SR

not on this issue.. mandating somebody’s 12 year old little girl who was gang raped can’t terminate that pregnancy isn’t even close to being the mainstream in this country..

let’s get on with building the wall, killing terrorists and turning around the economy

Banner loser day for him. Hes falling for the leading questions again and speaking without any real thinking.

Weird. Plenty of times he wont fall for leading questions, refuses to be led into the tricks, but hes way off his base today and being led around by the nose.

I tink hes much better on offense w his guard is up. Hes given thought and prep to things when hes there.

My mother has belonged to pro-life organizations since before Roe v. Wade was even decided. Every year they send her their candidate endorsements. And every year they endorse large numbers of Republicans whose position is identical to Trump.

They take pains to point out that they NEVER agree with abortion under any circumstances. But that all the Dems pretty much would have unfettered open season on them.

Sadly too many of our candidates have been trapped in interviews with Katie Couric-types who had them stammering around in circles over whether they’d force their daughter to carry to term if she was raped.

I agree there is no putting the genie back in the bottle but you may get agreement on limiting it to just these exceptions without alienating half the country. This is a very main stream opinion like it or not.

When did true conservatism stop being able to encompass a broad range of issues at the same time?

So, outlaw the sale of oral contraceptives, then. I don't agree with exceptions other than life of the mother but I don't see how they're as bad as the widespread use of contraceptives which, with very few exceptions, are abortaficants.

"As bad?" Since we can find something worse (and I'd argue with your example, anyway--yes, oral contraceptives should be outlawed!), that somehow means that we're allowed to commit evil? On that basis, we're allowed to do almost anything!

These appeals to "it's not worse than [x]" or "others do plenty of bad things already" (both of those excuses being basic fallacies) would INCREASE the evil in the world, not decrease it. The fact that we can't yet do anything (in the legal arena) about hormonal contraception (and its concomitant abortion effects) doesn't give us the green light to let ANOTHER evil have our approval.
