Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Tuesday comforted an independent voter who can't cast a ballot in New York's Democratic primary.
“Right now I’m doing everything I can to get my vote casted for him,” the man told ABC News upon encountering Sanders in New York City’s Times Square. I can sign a court order, an affidavit, whatever I need to do, and I’m going to do that. But it shouldn’t be this hard to vote.”
Sanders then patted his supporter’s shoulder before agreeing that the Empire State’s primary rules are shutting out voters.
“Today, three million people in the state of New York who are independents have lost their right to vote in the Democratic and Republican primaries,” he said. "That’s wrong.
“You’re paying for this election, it’s administered by the state, [and] you have a right to vote,” Sanders told his supporter. "That’s a very unfortunate thing that I hope will change in the future.”
The New York Times on Tuesday identified Sanders’s supporter as Michael Cantalupo, a 21-year-old independent who tried registering as a Democrat.
New York only allows registered Democrats to vote in its primary. That shuts out independents, who have boosted Sanders in states around the country.
Cantalupo said that he first attempted changing his party affiliation last May but that the Department of Motor Vehicles lost his paperwork. He then tried again in December, but that effort was past New York’s October deadline for voting eligibility in its Democratic primary.

1. There is NO RIGHT TO VOTE. There are rules associated with voting privileges, and that's always been the case. It's more akin to the privilege of getting a drivers' license... though of course even that history is being changed.
2. It's not that hard. It is a process that requires pre-planning and personal responsibility.
3. There are not 3 million 'independents' losing their "right" to vote. There are 3 million Mew Yorkers choosing not to associate themselves with either the Democrat or Republican parties.
4. "...who tried registering as a Democrat..." Obviously not trying very hard, but then that kinda sounds like a Democrat.
5. Of all states that you'd think might be havens for a 'right to vote', this is about New York state and its rules. Maybe that should indicate something to other states? I know it did to North Carolina. P.S. - these rules have been in place for many-a-year, too.
6. The word is "cast", not "casted".

If Sanders voters put half the effort into getting a job and supporting themselves that they do in voting Santa Claus Sanders into office to hand out government goodies to them, we'd have full employment and our Welfare problems would be solved.

Now, obviously the man lives in a state that doesn't allow that. But, he's not necessarily a moron because of it.
If you do not want to be associated with a part, fine that is your choice. But you should not be able to help choose a party nominee if you are not part of the part.

My point was that for inexperienced New York voters, I can easily see how they thought they'd be able to register at the poll, since so many other states allow that and it has been in the news so much.
This man got it wrong, but I'm not a fan of calling a man a fool because he wants to cast a ballot.
It does, I agree, emphasize the need to understand the voter registration rules in your state. My own son missed the registration deadline to vote in Tennessee, so he missed the primary. He'll vote for the first time in November.
Want to vote in a primary? Either become active in one of the existing parties or start your own.
if his vote is so derned important to him, shouldn’t he have been checking this out a long time ago? or perhaps it’s better to roll with the flow and not get excited until the media tells you..you can always whine...ignorance is no excuse
