My guess is that those pistol permits were probably for people working in either the diamond district or high end electronic/photo/video retail and wholesale dealerships, both of which are heavily Orthodox Jewish fields in NYC.
Both are industries where you have very high dollar products that are very easy to sell on the black market.

Out here in America, the States don’t presume to require that we have a “permit” to own a pistol. Increasingly, they don’t even presume to require that we have a “permit” to carry a pistol as we go about our daily peaceable business.
New York needs to follow our lead.
