Japan's Kumamoto quake upgraded to magnitude-7.3, PM cancels trip to battered region

Japan's Kumamoto earthquake, which took place early on Saturday, was upgraded from a provisional magnitude of 7.2 to 7.3.

The temblor was felt across wide swathes of southern Japan and triggered a tsunami warning, although the advisory was later lifted.

As the situation in Kumamoto continues to escalate, a second quake registering magnitude-5.8 also struck in the region at 03:55 local time.

Prior to that, numerous aftershocks jolted the region that had already been pummeled by a series of quakes and aftershocks striking a day earlier.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's planned trip to the already quake-ravaged region, scheduled for Saturday, has been officially cancelled following the latest quakes and the likelihood of further aftershocks, according to his office.

Previously a lot of news sources said it was a 7.0, which is still very strong, soon after a 6.5 a day earlier.

I think I’ll not move to Japan.

And stay away from the coastal areas of the Pacific northwest:

The Really Big One
An earthquake will destroy a sizable portion of the coastal Northwest. The question is when.

Oh, go do it.

If you're taller than 5'8" they'll worship you as a God.

Good deal.

So shave your head and wear a bathrobe. They’ll think you’re a Buddha

I am sitting here in Sasebo, Japan riding all these quakes out for the past few days. Another one just occurred a few minutes ago. Last nites 7.3 seems to have caused quite a bit of physical destruction. Alerts were going off at 0140 am of a Tsunami and that did not occur. On TV they are showing a huge land slide of a mountainous region that wiped out a highway. It appears that all of the destruction is near a river bed area. That is where many of the nine deaths occurred on Thursdays smaller 6.2 quake.

The USGS has a slightly different scale than the Japanese. This report is from the Chinese news agency so it’s likely reporting using the Japanese scale.

You get used to all but the huge ones.

I actually ENJOY 90% of earthquakes.

You can feel more earthquakes in a year in Japan than you can in 10 or even 20 in California.

Yes there have been 4 main shocks now and 100's of after shocks. Sasebo is about 60 to 70 miles from the epicenter so we are riding these out with relative ease. Lots of people driven out of their homes in the quake area though.
