Kerry: Shooting down Russia jets ´would have been justified´
BBC ^ | 4/14/15 | Staff

Two Russian jets flew within metres of the ship on Monday, US officials said. Russia´s defence ministry said the Su-24 fighter jets "turned away in observance of all safety measures" after observing the USS Donald Cook. Mr Kerry criticised the gesture and said contact had been made with Moscow. "We condemn this kind of behaviour," he told the Miami Herald and CNN Espanol in a joint interview. "It is reckless. It is provocative. It is dangerous. And under the rules of engagement, that could have been a shoot-down." He added that the US "is not going to be intimidated on

I think that advice is for when armies are meeting on a battlefield and the battle is inevitable so skirmishers can draw a suboptimal attack. Right now Russia knows that it doesn’t have any hope against NATO in a battlefield.

They are just doing it for their TV because Russian people are angry about being very poor and that kind of stuff can channel their anger against Americans instead of Putin’s clan.

The average monthly salary in Russia is now around $400 a month. Most people make even much less than that. That hardship makes common people angry and Putin really really wants that the anger is not directed at him.

Kerry is of course playing straight into Putin’s hand by saying these big words and doing nothing. Even a small action would be much better than empty words no matter how pompous. For example declaring that USA no longer allows export of optical sights for hunting rifles to Russia. Russia can’t make optical sights themselves and hunters is a group that Kremlin does not want to piss off as they have guns.

Wow.. When we first went into Syria, near a base they had since the seventies.. That was provocative. Since then, I have been waiting on us to be officially at war with Russia.. Why would we do that? Apaches training for Artic conditions.. I read here that we need 50k troops to fight ISIL. I disagree with that, but we do if we are in a proxy war with Russia, that’s a good starting number. Luckily for Obama, Hillary, pelosi and the other exemptocrats, it won’t be their sons, daughters, wives, husbands and grandchildren. Makes no sense to give billions to Iran, so they can purchase Russian mil tech... Well they believe the Mahdi would return, if they slaughter enough people, so maybe.

You realize that our ship is in the Baltic? Next to Lithuania - a provocation at the very least. Visualize a russian ship up in the chesapeake bay or on the great lakes or off houston - same difference. You don’t send your warships half way around the world to the front door of russia and sit there with known nukes on board. Russia sees the baltic as their back yard - they have every reason to do so.

So Poland should have placed itself farther away from Russia in order to not provoke it by it’s existence?

In my opinion that is giving Russian bully too much.

The propagandists ignore that this event was on the front door step of russia - the baltic is their home base. Why we are deploying nukes to europe and carting them around in ships on the baltic is an insane mystery. The answer is that the new world order is sure they can and will ‘take over’ russia, one country that has survived communism and would rather die than go back there again. Hillary is not a democrat - she is the vanguard of the new world order of unelected bureaucrats, plutocrats and propagandists who want to own russia.

Russia has built over 50 bases in the arctic. We have ceded all arctic access to russia. Our military is run by yes men who serve at the pleasure of a man who wants to destroy his own country.

What does poland have to do with our destroyers carting nukes around the balatic and provoking russia? Kaliningrad is a sensitive Russian territory carved out of the coast of Poland. You don’t send nukes on warships to sit off Kaliningrad.

Probably goes on all the time, all over the world, with aviators of all nations.

I was in the Catapults division on a carrier during the Cold War. The ship had to anchor offshore at the ports in the Med. One day, while so anchored, a Russian jet was spotted about 100 ft. above the water coming at us and leaving a water wake. The plane pulled up on afterburner and went over our ship at about 300 ft. ....Such incidents were frequent but that was the only one I witnessed.

The drill was about a helicopter landing on a ship. That does not have anything to do with nukes. Poles and Americans with Polish roots would not agree with your assessment that they are to be Russian slaves so we don’t offend the delicate Russian imperialistic feelings.

Why not just shoot them down and then claim it is an accident and an example as to why you should not do such provocative acts like those pilots.

“Oops, I accidentally left the AEGIS in ‘automatic’”.

The side of freedom won the Cold War. It seems to me that you are advocating giving a handicap for Russians and sentencing 40 million Poles into the chains of slavery just so that the Russians would not be upset or “triggered” about their loss.

Like when China sent warships into US territorial waters off Alaska when Obama was visiting Alaska? I don’t think we buzzed their warships. Obama doesn’t have the guts for that, or for being POTUS for that matter.

“You don’t send your warships half way around the world to the front door of russia and sit there with known nukes on board.”

This is incorrect. The US took all nuclear weapons off the general purpose fleet, along with all tactical nukes, in the 1990’s. The only nuclear weapons the US has at sea are thestrategic deterrent force in Trident 2 sea launched ballistic missiles on the Ohio class subs.

In the old days (70s & 80s) of playing with the Soviet forces, we could track them with missile or gunfire control radar, but could not lock on them. They in turn would routinely track our aircraft or ships, with their fire control radar, but would not lock up on us.

I watched a video and the guys on board were acting as if they were getting a free air show.
There was no concern on there faces which caused me great concern.

Those 2 fighters could have blown that ship out of the water.

They were not prepared and should have been at battle stations, not gawking into the sky like a tourists.

Pathetic IMO
