HIROSHIMA, Japan (Reuters) - John Kerry will not offer an apology for the United States' use of the atomic bomb against Japan when he becomes the first U.S. secretary of state to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum on Monday, a senior U.S. official said.

Kerry is visiting the city, which was obliterated by a U.S. atomic bomb on Aug. 6, 1945, to attend gathering of foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) advanced economies that Japan opened on Sunday with a call to end nuclear weapons.

What did the Japanese think they were going to gain by attacking the US?

Did they really think we were going to lay down and give up?

After successful conquests the Japs had in China, I guess they figured the U.S. would be a pushover.

They chose poorly.

Today I learned during World War II in 1940, Japan bombed Ningbo with ceramic bombs full of fleas carrying the bubonic plague.

It’s incredible just how inhumane the Japs once were.

“Japan bombed Ningbo with ceramic bombs full of fleas carrying the bubonic plague.”

That movie “Men behind the sun” details the ceramic plague bomb development. They were utterly insane.

My next door neighbors are from Japan. She is very nice, he has a bit of an attitude but when I see the Japanese state flag flying in their back yard I get a little p*$$€d off. I am 75 and my early memories include bits about WW2. I had older cousins who fought in the Pacific.

..My mother spent the war years in suburban Lost Angeles, working on planes...

Interesting story. My Mom was a WAC. She joined when she married my Dad in 1944. She was medically discharged and went to work at a factory in Dallas making self sealing fuel tanks for P51 Mustangs. She said she had to wear a gas mask everyday in the room she worked in. I don’t know why. It must have been some very toxic stuff they were working with.

My dad’s airborne regiment (511PIR/11thAB) was the first
of the occupation forces in Japan in Aug 45. My dad
received a serious head wound during the battle for Manila
so he was head was already back in the states. I
had the privilege of interviewing Gen Henry “Butch” Muller
in 2001 about his part as the chief planner (G2) for the
Los Banos Raid, the most successful prisoner rescue of WWll.
By the end of the war he was Asst G2 of the US 8th Army.
He told me that his main job was to collect data and
evaluate how many casualties the 8th Army might incur in
an invasion of Japan. He indicated about 90K for the
8th Army alone when I asked him.

My father was getting ready to attending landing craft school before the A-bomb was dropped on Japan. He was in the Coast Guard and was going to be one of the guys who operated the landing crafts.

According to one estimate I saw, a conventional invasion of Japan would have cost 5 - 6 million Japanese lives and one million American casualties.

Many people are still buying wartime propaganda: an invasion of Japan would cause millions of casualties. Japan was defeated at the time of the bombing. There was no need to invade. A blockade would result in them starving. Of course there were hardcore holdouts. However, they eventually would have had to give in without an invasion. The Japanese were exceedingly cruel. Who was not? They should apologize to the Chinese when the Chinese admit to killing 60 to 100 million of their own people. They did not surrender unconditionally. They were allowed to keep the emperor. Had they been allowed to keep Korea and Manchuria tens of thousands of Americans would be alive today.

Apologize for turning Japan into the most feminized, wussy, self-hating people on the planet?

They were once mightier and angrier than any Jihadist or Nazi that ever lived.

Now they just have sex with robots and obsess over their I-Pets.

The Japanese have so much more to be apologetic for - Nanking, Manchuria, Korea, Burma, Philipines, etc.

Have the Japanese apologized to the Koreans for the Imjin War yet? After all, they have been terrorizing the Koreans for 400 years.

History aside, Japan is Americas’s best friend/partner in Asia today.

The ChiComs did the same thing in Tibet barely 10 years later - forced abortions, PLA Air Force bombing of civilian areas, medical experimentation, etc. The ChiComs learned a great deal from the Japanese and perfected it on the Tibetians.

Sad - guess what comes around, goes around.
