EDITORIAL: It's not your grandpa's GOP... [Colorado Senate race]
Colorado Springs Gazette ^ | 4/10/2016 | The Gazette editorial board

The Republican Party is getting a political blood transfusion. For Democrats, this may not be good news.

Colorado's GOP transformation progressed Saturday with the convention election of El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn to run in the Republican primary of the United States Senate. He won with 2,664 votes. Tim Neville, the presumed front-runner going in, garnered only 696 votes.

This is the race involving Michael Bennet's seat in the U.S. Senate.

I don't know anything about Darryl Glenn except what's on his website; but at least Tim Neville is out. In the past few weeks I've gotten 64 spam emails from Neville begging for money; but they seem to have stopped now.

It’s a steep uphill battle against corruption like in Colorado where the official @cologop actually tweets out; “We did it! #nevertrump”;

Colorado GOP elites are #nevertrump
http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3419332/posts

#nevertrump is more than a simple political statment - it’s a mission statement. And it was executed by the Colorado GOP as a mission statement. That is not we-the people.

It would be nice to have more black Republicans in the Senate. That race card will never go away. We missed opportunities in Georgia when Herman Cain ran and in Oklahoma when the House speaker was beaten by some skinny fella who looked very pale. Both were well known and qualified.

I was a delegate attending yesterday and Darryl Glenn’s speech was powerful and very well received.

I’ve given money to Neville and was holding a Neville sign.....but voted for Glenn.

From the editorial, it sounds like Ryan Frazier is also going to be on the primary ballot (by petition). He's been popular here in Mesa County as a visiting Tea Party speaker.

The whole picture is NOT what most Americans are getting...

This isn’t about RACE...we are all HUMAN BEINGS...we have two eyes, a mouth, a nose, two ears, two arms, two feet, two legs, 10 fingers and 10 toes...

Martin Luther King had this country working together, we almost had this ‘racist’ crap out the door, and here comes obuma and his muslim brotherhood and have done NOTHING for the Black Community except crap all over them, he had no plans and never did have any plans to help his Black Community Brotherhood....they are far worse off today than they were before Martin Luther King started, and people are so blinded and stupid and dumbed down by the talking heads, the online media crap they can’t see what is happening...’

America is at risk here!!! Do you NOT understand that????

Your on a computer, start to use it for research, find this stuff out, this has NOTHING to do with ‘racist’ this is America we are talking about, and believe me, obuma doesn’t want to give up the keys to the White Hut, so watch out, there is going to be some big explosion somewhere where he can declare Martial Law before this election....don’t sit there, get busy to save America!!!

Darryl Glenn was the big surprise winner the the GOP convention. He give a speech that was very well received. A key line “I’m tired of hearing about Republicans reaching across the aisle. We need to step up and lead, ladies and gentlemen,”

If I understand correctly Tim Neville and everyone else who sought to get on the primary ballot via the convention failed to meet the 30% threshold and thus will not be on the ballot.

4 candidates skipped the convo, Robert Blaha, Ryan Frazier, Jack Graham and Jon Keyser, they are seeking to get on the ballot the conventional way, with petition signatures.

I would surmise that the Glenn and Keyser are now the main candidates in the primary.

In other news, 32-year old Calandra Vargas, an unknown, also had a well revived speech and romped on to the primary ballot against Congressman Doug Lamborn. Lamborn got only 35%, so I suppose he just barely made the ballot.

This editorial strikes a hopeful tone.

As AuH2o pointed out, Darryl Glenn’s biggest problem seems to be being low on $$, so hopefully he’ll get some love in that area.

Curious that Calandra Vargas is not even listed as a candidate on Politics1, and she managed to win over Lamborn for a ballot slot. That’s embarrassing for Lamborn.

Paging the NRSC, turn on the spigot. Keyser seems good too but I’m inclined to favor Glenn after this. This was a significant event and seems like just the kind of thing the CO GOP needed to inject some energy into this race.

The article says Vargas was a write in (at the convo?) which adds another layer of wow, humiliating for Lamborn. She seems to have come out of no where. Gunzberger hasn’t updated Politics1 but Ourcampaigns has her

http://www.ourcampaigns.com/CandidateDetail.html?CandidateID=369340

Is it called a convention or an assembly?

http://gazette.com/meet-new-5th-district-gop-candidate-calandra-vargas/article/1573827#cxrecs_s
Video at link, haven’t watched it,

According to one article I read you can submit petitions and still try to get nominated at the convo and if you get at least 10% at the convo you can still get on via petition. But Neville didn’t take that precaution (deadline was Apr. 4th) being confident of getting at least 30% at the convo (and in fact confident of winning it).

I don’t know if Lamborn took the precaution or if incumbents are exempted from the 30% requirement, if no on both counts, then he’s lucky to even be on the primary ballot. I gotta think he’s still favored in the primary though.

I think to be technically correct, the county level is called an assembly and the state level is called a convention.

According to one article I read you can submit petitions and still try to get nominated at the convo and if you get at least 10% at the convo you can still get on via petition.

We had a county commissioner candidate do this recently. It's probably true for other offices as well.

Eric Underwood came on as a write-in candidate for U.S. Senate at State Ass’y yesterday.

Very sharp, a bit young, but he’ll find a path.
He didn’t help himself by mentioning ties to Sen. Susan Collins.....waaay lib Repub.

oh....also Black.

You should watch the Vargas video: She appears to be the real deal. And she has credentials and experience, not just a stump speech.

As for Glenn, his victory at the convention after a powerful speech reminds me of how Mia Love went from a little-known mayor to the GOP U.S. House nominee for UT-04 in 2012. It certainly helped that the convention was in Colorado Springs, where Glenn is a longtime city councilman and county commissioner. Hopefully this will result in an increase in donations to his campaign and a victory at the primary; he =appears to have more of an upside than the other GOP Senate candidates.

Doug Lamborn makes a negative impression on many people. He played dirty to win his first election and obviously many are not in a forgive-and-forget mood.

Dylan Glenn’s victory is a surprise. I have nothing against him, but is he strong enough to win in November?

If I have her background right, she’s a staffer for a state Senator, was a campaign aide for a State Rep. and was once an intern in Lamborn’s our office? Imagine that.

I’m seeing every reason to favor her nomination. She’s got her work cut out, just 18 more votes and she’d been the only person on the ballot (no dems according to one article, Politics1 lists one, and has not added Vargas, who doesn’t have a site yet, if they don’t add her I guess I’ll have to email Gunzberger myself)

In constrast to Trumper talk about how this was the undemocratic establishment at work, this convention seems to be have been a tour de force of grassroots conservatism.

Some guy named Chuck Norris is challenging Diana DeGette in the rat primary for CD 1. He was the rat nominee in 1986 in CD 6 against Congressman Dan Schaefer.

I hope he upsets DeGette and that the real Chuck Norris cuts an ad for his GOP opponent. LOL.

Jon Keyser, whom Politics1.com calls “the NRSC’s preferred candidate”, was thrown off the ballot, not enough sigs. He’s appealing. If the decision stands that would seemingly clear the nomination for Darryl Glenn.

In other news, Utah Governor Gery Herbert, something of a RINO, finished 2nd at the GOP state convention to Overstock.com CEO Jonathan Johnson, 55%-45%, 60% was needed to win the nomination outright, so they proceed to a primary. I don’t much about Johnson but the need for a change seems clear.

Fruitcake Ex-Congressman Merill Cook challenged the incumbent State Treasurer, he got his butt kicked badly. When will this dude get the message that no one wants him in office?

Indiana Senate Poll (Howey/WTHR) Todd Young 43% - Marlin Stutzman 31%.

I read Jonathan Johnson’s website and his positions on the issues, and he appears to be suitably Conservative to defeat RINO Herbert.

Jon Keyser missed making the ballot by only 86 valid signatures. He was my first choice, but I think he should give it up and support Glenn. Otherwise, he’ll look like a sore loser.
