Millennials brush off Founding Fathers, overwhelmingly oppose free speech
The Washington Times ^ | April 6, 2016 | Bradford Richardson

The relationship between college students and free speech: It’s complicated.

A new Gallup survey said 72 percent of college students oppose campus restrictions on “expressing political views that are upsetting or offensive to certain groups.”

But asked whether “slurs” and other “intentionally offensive” language should be banned, and they’re all for it.

Sixty-nine percent of college students surveyed said they would be in favor of prohibiting “intentionally offensive” speech on campus, and 63 percent also said they would support administrative measures to ban “costumes that stereotype certain racial or ethnic groups.”

As the sound and the fury over the “Trump 2016” chalkings shows, there’s a gray area between political expression and intentionally offensive speech in the minds of today’s college students.

As Gallup notes, that controversy may have arisen “out of the ambiguity of whether such messages are permissible expressions of controversial political viewpoints or impermissible expressions designed to hurt and threaten members of certain groups.”

Other metrics in the survey similarly show college students hedging on their commitment to free speech – supporting it in the abstract, but wavering when specific examples are put forward.

Our vast number of colleges and universities are liberal leftist bastions loaded with snowflakes that seem to want it both ways, they're all for free speech as long as it's speech they agree with.

Maybe we need to start sending students to Cuba so they can get a preview of the world they are demanding.

islam is a totalitarian death cult founded by a child rapist.

Bears repeating. Often, apparently.

How much do you want to bet that they are just saying what they have to say so they can get their degrees. They’ve seen what happens to violators. Just like in the 1960’s the vast majority of college students were just there to get an education and had nothing to do with the protests. And many of them are tea party activists now. The media is pushing its story and really think that if they lie enough it will become true. I have more faith in our youth and do not believe the media myths about them any more than I believe their other myths about me.

You can't "vote" to override the First Amendment any more than you can vote to make slavery legal.

I remember back in the days when "free speech" was about liberals saying the most vile, outrageous things. They told us how it was a great idea and how speech that upset people needed the most protection.

How about it, clowns? You willing to reap what you sow? Or are you just going to embrace your hypocrisy?

[Academic question. We all know the answer.]

The poisonous seeds sown more than sixty years ago by the Frankfurt School have at long last produced the rotten fruit that is this generation of destructive gender-fluid barbarians. As planned, they seethe with resentment, are unfettered from all morality and completely stuck on ‘self,’ are anti-intellectual and anti-Constitutional America.

“as long as it’s speech they agree with. “

“Common sense” speech control.

The logical next step after “common sense” gun control.

While, God willing, we win in November, THIS is why it's a lost cause. We cannot combat the captive audience that is public schools & universities

We WILL be Europe, and soon, having been destroyed from within.

When the left wanted to push their agenda... “free speech” was all the rage.

Now that they are in power... eh.. that “free speech” stuff... sort of makes them uncomfortable... and now it’s being banned!

So if it’s “Banned” and someone violates it, then what?

Disciplinary actions?

Expulsions?

Or First Amendment lawsuits?

Our Founding Fathers insisted that political discourse be conducted in a gentlemanly and statesmanship-like manner. George Washington fined his troops for profanity.

So called conservatives are just as bad at vile speech as the leftists. The First Amendment does not protect profanity or personal diatribe. It protects the right to political discourse, even if those views are contrary to the current state of governance.
