I think Cruz will win the nomination on the 1st or 2nd vote at the convention.

The current rule (8) is in effect until changed.

The old rule (5) would be a "defensible" position, but would still eliminate Kasich.

Anything that goes beyond the old rule (i.e, <5) would cause massive abandonment of the Republican Party by the base.

The rules can, and probably will, be changed. The devil is in the details. There is a limit to how much change the base will accept before the long knives and pitchforks come out, and the GOPe knows that. Anything that suddenly makes Kasich ballot eligible would be a bridge too far for Priebus.
