The more cannabis you smoke, the more likely you are to be a loser, finds international study

Persistent users likely to be lower paid and have relationship difficulties

Research found abusers ended up in a lower social class than their parents

Also more prone to be in less skilled, prestigious jobs and to run into debt

Study by Californian university followed children from birth up to age of 38The study, conducted by a team of researchers led by Magdalena Cerda at the University of California and Avshalom Caspi and Terrie Moffitt at Duke University, appeared in the journal Clinical Psychological Science.

'Our research does not support arguments for or against cannabis legalization,' said Cerda. 'But it does show that cannabis was not safe for the long-term users tracked in our study.

'Our study found that regular cannabis users experienced downward social mobility and more financial problems such as troubles with debt and cash flow than those who did not report such persistent use.

'Regular long-term users also had more antisocial behaviors at work, such as stealing money or lying to get a job, and experienced more relationship problems, such as intimate partner violence and controlling abuse.'

Even among cannabis users who were never convicted for a cannabis offense, we found that persistent and regular cannabis use was linked to economic and social problems.'

While both heavy alcohol and cannabis use were similarly associated with declines, the authors found that those dependent on cannabis experienced more financial difficulties.

'Cannabis may be safer than alcohol for your health, but not for your finances,' said Moffitt.

For the study, 947 participants who had completed at least three of the five adult cannabis assessments from ages 18 through 38.

Eighteen percent, or 173 participants, were considered marijuana dependent in at least one wave of the study, and 15 per cent fell into the regular cannabis use categories.

They’re now blaming decades of Middle America decline on pot instead of loser leadership and corrupt government who’s looted the American treasure?

Amazing.

Given government’s decades long terrible job performance record, maybe it’s all those in D.C. who are the potheads.

Oh that’s right, those folks are not subjected to random drug tests. That only applies to the tax paying peons in low paying jobs.

Many drug users are simply medicating their miserableness because they don’t know how else to deal with themselves.

In related news, the Sun arose today...again.

Or, from different frame of reference, the Earth continued to rotate on her axis.

It’s ultimately impossible to stop self destruction through legislation. A good portion of the national debt could be attributed to our attempts to do that. The best we can do is let people do what they want, as long as they don’t hurt another person, and let them police themselves.

Good point. Does the pot cause the loser or is the loser attracted to pot? Looked at from a Calvinist perspective it doesn’t much matter. But still, good point.

I understand more and more states are considering voting to allow recreational marijuana.

The Vermont Senate voted to legalize recreational mj and the gov said he will sign the bill if it passes the House.

CA is leaning toward full legalization by referendum this November.

Shocker Alert!

I support legalization of MJ.... but I knew this to be a fact decades ago.

MJ may have some benefits, but a dopehead is a dopehead is a dopehead....

I know retired cops who smoke pot every day. These guys are on pensions to the tune of 75k and up, for life. I don’t think they’d consider themselves to be “miserable”.

Btw, there are scientist, judges, lawyers, politicians, sports superstars, et al who use cannabis.

Based on some comments here, it appears some posters are detached, as if they’re living back in the 50s.

All those people have already achieved some success in life and would have less of a problem with the well-known lack of motivation that tends to come with regular marijuana use. Maybe their use is not as heavy as younger, more-typical stoners? Maybe they’re content with getting a little relaxation out of it, rather than getting thoroughly wasted, too. Like other intoxicants, some handle it well and others don’t.
