Donald Trump vs. Ted Cruz Creates a Headache for Talk Radio Hosts
New York Times ^ | 3/29/16 | Nick Consanti

Posted on 03/29/2016 2:16:26 PM PDT by Mozilla

Even Michael Savage had had enough. As the insults and innuendos over candidates’ wives and tabloid reports of suspected affairs dominated the back and forth between Senator Ted Cruz and Donald J. Trump, Mr. Savage, one of the country’s most popular conservative radio hosts and an ardent supporter of Mr. Trump, drew a red line last week. “I’ve supported Trump and probably still will, but if he won’t disavow this guy Pecker and this story, I may withdraw my support,” he said on the air on Friday. He was referring to David J. Pecker, the owner of The National Enquirer, which published the allegations of sexual affairs against Mr. Cruz. “I am not going to support anyone who engages in assassination by innuendo,” Mr. Savage added. But on Monday, Mr. Trump and Mr. Savage reconciled in a mostly fawning interview, with no apology from Mr. Trump, who nevertheless called The Enquirer’s allegation that Mr. Cruz had affairs “garbage.” The momentary rupture, however brief, was emblematic. As the fractures in the Republican Party over the candidacy of Mr. Trump grow deeper by the day, conservative talk radio is having its own identity crisis. Long a powerful and potent agitator of right-wing politics, conservative radio hosts are one of the few forces that can sway the opinions of the Trump electorate. And with Mr. Trump and Mr. Cruz now tearing each other — and the party — apart, the biggest names in the field are delicately navigating how to address Mr. Trump’s latest provocations without alienating listeners.

Article discussing talk radio and the Republican primary. It seems to be anti Trump a bit. But it discusses the troubles talk radio has encountered. Unfortunately, conservative sites won't touch this.

Only Trump is the problem? Cruz blaming Trump for everything - for the protesters at his rallies, for the Brussels attack, and for the Enquirer article is not a problem at all?

Yeah, right. The problem is that Trump is fighting everyone - except the voters. If he wins, it will be a miracle.

I’m guessing a big future ratings headache for the establishment water carriers, Rush and Levin.

Oh who cares about them?

For as little as they’ve done but make lots of money complaining, a little discomfort is the least of their problems.

Why do you say Limbaugh and Levin are establishment?

Donald Trump doesn’t need to disavow David J. Pecker/The National Enquirer. Trump already said he had nothing to do with it.

If The National Enquirer lied about Cruz, Cruz should sue.

What really happened. The photo was likely purchased months ago and being saved for the ‘ripe moment.’

The Cruz Mistress Crises -#theThing was heavily rumored to be released. So Cruz’s team sent out the Trump photo as a preemptive strike to soften the blowback for Cruz. The bonus was mocking the outrage and being able to blame Trump for retaliatory treatment.

And, there’s proof on the celebrity gossip blogs. The first challenge to find a cheating POTUS candidate was in August 2015. Another challenge was issued (but reworded more specific) in December 2015. Hundreds of comments or tips were sent in to their sleuths. And POTUS was solved to be Cruz 12/15, BTW. Only difference is the mistress was supposed to be a lobbyist. So maybe there’s another guy, yet to be outed. Or maybe a mistress yet to be uncovered.

Team Cruz likely received a 48 hour notice from the Enquirer. That is how they dealt with Sarah Palin’s daughter and Levi Johnson. They informed both families and Sarah was forced to disclose Bristol’s condition. But they did give her the courtesy of the “heads-up.”

This is a nothing story, as Trump called in and spoke with Savage and adamantly denied being involved in the NE expose of TedScruz.

.........................................................

Levin is a blatant Cruz supporter. Rush doesn’t have the guts to take an outright stand but his (not so) subtle innuendo’s all lead to him being against Trump and therefore helping Cruz.

AND THE major point is that Cruz does not stand a chance if it goes to the convention. This is a giant game of three card monty. Hence, the establishment wins thanks to dupes (although I think Rush knows what he is doing) like Rush and Mark.

If I understand correctly, your analysis is based on who they’re endorsing. Or, do you believe they’ve supported the establishment agenda?

They are invested in nobody winning who will fix the problems. They only complain.

Want to save America. Trump is the only chance. Hence, I'm done with Levin and Rush is making a huge mistake. As far as Savage, who gives a crap.

Trump for President. Only one that has real solutions.

His schtick is tiresome and boring.

When Cruz did not do a full stop after condemning the rioting by non-Trump Democrats, he committed a serious unforced error, a blunder. . . . and I say so a Cruz contributor. I gagged the moment I heard him say it.

In retrospect wire service journalism - pointedly Megyn Kelly in particular - ran interference for Trump. If you think about it, avoiding substance and going straight to the gutter, as Kelly did, could hardly have any other effect than “throwing” Trump - a reality TV star, after all - directly "into the briar patch.” It positioned Trump as a champion of anti-PC. And evaded Cruz’s strength, which is a consistent “conservative” (classic liberal) worldview. In fact, as Rush pointed out by way of asserting to a questioner that Cruz still had a chance to win, the moderators of the debates did their best to simply treat Cruz as an irrelevance, a non-person. The whole FNC stonewalled Cruz pretty much right up to his Iowa Caucus win.

So, as Rush said, it was a miracle of sorts that Cruz rose to be one of the last two (disregarding the Kasich distraction) standing. But, as you suggest, Cruz has not been covering himself with glory lately. The Scott Walker endorsement in Wisconsin is an interesting development; Rush points out that WI results will affect the momentum in the race, one way or the other.

Michael Berry in Houston has gone off the deep end when it comes to Trump.

Again, I’m going to defend Rush.

He is too smart to endorse a candidate in the primary; but, made it clear again today that he does not consider himself a member of the Conservative “Industry” that is locked at the hip with Cruz due to their personal financial interests as pundits, consultants, whatever.

Again, he made the point that a “Populist” may be what is required to beat the Democrats.

It doesn’t create any headaches for thinking people. Only paid GOPe globalist Cruz shills who need to come up with daily mental gymnastics to justify siding with leftists.

“Later, in February, Mr. Limbaugh heaped praise on Mr. Cruz. “If conservatism is the dominating factor in how you vote, there is no other choice for you in this campaign than Ted Cruz,” he said, before dropping the highest of Republican compliments: “This is the closest in our lifetimes we have ever been to Ronald Reagan.”

He is absolutely right, and I wish he would break his long held rule of not endorsing candidates, because this is a unique election. While Trump is strong, as far as what he says, on immigration, he is otherwise very liberal.
