A Russian special forces soldier appears to have pulled a move straight out of an action movie, calling down an airstrike on himself after he was discovered by ISIS troops in Syria, Reuters reports. According to AFP, the soldier was on a week-long mission identifying ISIS targets and passing the coordinates along for airstrikes. He called for his final, dramatic airstrike at some point in the past week near Palmyra. "The soldier died heroically, calling the strike onto himself after he was discovered and surrounded by terrorists," Reuters quotes the Interfax news agency.
The Russian soldier is at least the seventh killed in Syria since Russia launched a military campaign in the Middle Eastern country back in September. But it was only this week that Russia finally admitted it had special forces soldiers participating in combat missions inside Syria. Syrian troops entered Palmyra on Thursday. It had been held by ISIS since last May.
Tough way to be awarded the Hero of the Russian Federation.

Given the atrocities ISIS commits against prisoners (burning alive, drowning in a cage, throwing off buildings, beheading) I think this is a perfectly rational response by the solider.
Better to die (and take a few ISIS members with you) than to fall into their hands and face...
This is the same situation allied soldiers faced when fighting the Japanese. Early on in the war they found the remains of American prisoners had been mutilated by the Japanese; they did not allow themselves to be taken prisoner after that, nor did they take prisoners.

It has been 30 years since I saw him but I knew an ex marine who was awarded a silver star for just this sort of action.
His unit was in the process of being overrun by the dinks and he called in an artillery barrage on his own coordinates. As he explained it to me he and the rest of the marines were in their holes and the enemy was in the open trying to overwhelm them. He figured this action would kill far more of the enemy than his fellow soldiers. There was nothing else left to do.
It worked.

It would not surprise me to find that there was a Roman soldier who signaled to the rear a request to have his position showered with archery fire. It seems that in the worst of situations the best soldiers are suicidally practical.
