Revealed: Queen backs Brexit as alleged EU bust-up with ex-Deputy PM emerges

The Queen has been hailed as a backer of Brexit tonight after details emerged of an extraordinary alleged bust-up between her and Nick Clegg over Europe.

Her Majesty let rip at the then Deputy PM during a lunch at Windsor Castle, The Sun has been told.

The 89-year-old monarch firmly told passionate pro-European Mr Clegg that she believed the EU was heading in the wrong direction.

Her stinging reprimand went on for “quite a while”, leaving other guests around the table stunned.

The account of the bombshell lunch during the last government - which a handful of other government ministers also attended - has been relayed to The Sun by a highly reliable source.

The senior source said: “People who heard their conversation were left in no doubt at all about the Queen’s views on European integration.

“It was really something, and it went on for quite a while.

“The EU is clearly something Her Majesty feels passionately about.”

The monarch is also said to have revealed her Eurosceptic feelings during a separate conversation with MPs at a Buckingham Palace reception.

One of a group of Parliamentarians in a circle with her at the time asked Her Majesty for her thoughts on Brussels.

The Queen is said to have snapped back angrily: “I don’t understand Europe”.

A parliamentary source, who relayed the remark to The Sun, said: “It was said with quite some venom and emotion. I shall never forget it”.

The claims will explode a furious controversy.

Does the Queen still have authority to order drawing and quartering for treason?

The Queen is but a figurehead technically, but in reality, she remains a major influence on many of the British. The little I know about the Brexit situation, I tend to agree with her. The EU is not working out, culturally or economically. Just take a peek at Italy, Greece and most of all, Germany. Turkey is not a very good potential partner either, and their relationship to the whole of Europe becomes more ominous by the day.

I am glad that this got into reports. It will give the old guard some backbone. If the aging Monarch at near 90 can refuse to continue the PC buy-in, why can’t we, will be the thinking for some.

WOW! I wouldn’t have expected that from the Queen, but good for her.

Being a Canadian monarchist and remembering that Queen Elizabeth II grew up in an age when, “The sun never sets on the British Empire”, I am not at all surprised by her response. Remember, the Royal Family remained in London during the Blitz and that Princess Elizabeth worked as a mechanic and truck driver in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service (ie: British Army), after begging her father, the King, for months, to do something to help the War effort.

She is a patriot, loving her country, unlike your current _resident and my country’s current Prime Minister (much more ‘overdone’ than ‘prime’, in my opinion).

Turkey is using the "refugee" crisis as leverage against the EU, coercing agreement to Turkish demands. Basically it is "Let us in and pay up, we'll take the rabble off your hands. If not, we open the sluice gates even wider and you deal with it."

EU is so fractured that they may not be able to resist. Which would mean the end of Europe even sooner.

I understand the monarchy has great latent power; it can dissolve parliament and take the reins of govt in its own hands until a new parliament is be elected, which will not occur until the monarchy says so. I could be wrong about this of course, but I am fairly sure I am correct about this. Maybe we will see this happen; these are interesting times.

She’s the ruler of the UK after all. Why would anyone, especially her, want to see the UK increasingly ruled by corrupt, bumbling, proto-fascist central planners from Brussels?
